When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up by mother, I always quickly responded by saying something that I thought would please her like a doctor or firefighter. Secretly, I did not want do any of those things although they both are respected career choices. I, however, dreamed of playing in the National basketball Association (NBA) and traveling the world as a professional basketball player. I did not posses the courage to tell my mother because she wanted my twin brother and I to be accomplished educators or doctors but even at the age of six of told myself if I put my mind to it I could do anything. Making my dream a reality was not easy and there have been many twists and turns.

I have had a passion to play basketball since I was six years old. Surprisingly, I did not participate in any youth basketball leagues growing up. My mother like all mothers was protective and cared more about my academics, so my twin brother and I were reduced to playing in the front yard with other children in my neighborhood. With the help of friends and hours of practice I was able to make the team my 7th and 8th grade year. Unfortunately, my mother stepped in and banned me from playing in 9th grade so I could concentrate on other extra curricular activities such as marching band and JROTC.
