College Admissions Essay: A Career As An Athlete

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high. Regardless, I began to work diligently and spent additional time perfecting my skills. My sister and I went to local gyms and practiced for hours with just the two of us. When all of the other players were having fun, I was focusing hard and absorbing as much information as I could from my coaches. My coach saw the desire and dedication in me that I didn’t even know was visible and he took a chance and put me on his team. Being an outgoing person and a natural leader, the upperclassmen did not appreciate my constant input and take-charge attitude. I was shunned from my team, and every time I talked, I was told to “shut up” because I was a “stupid freshman.” I had never encountered such an intimidating team environment and I felt as if there was no escape, considering I spent at least two hours a day with my team. This negative environment led me to experience ‘freshman nerves’, causing me to underperform when I was under pressure. I didn’t believe my team had my back or was there for me, and it was hard for me to play confidently without the support of my teammates. Although I felt hurt and alone, I knew gaining the acceptance of my team wouldn’t be worth changing the person who I really

My thought on the club was that we were going to do really well with all the talent and ability on the team. Time went by and I slowly felt as if my vision for the flub was just wasting away, people didn 't know each other so we had bad chemistry throughout the team, people would get into arguments, and our coaches were not performing as well as promised. Half way through the season my high expectations went out the window and I think everyone else’s did too. My teammates and I sort of gave up, with a whole half season, and a few tournaments and showcases left we just kind of gave up.…

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…
