Essay My Life That Shaped Who I Am

One of the most important events in my life that shaped who I am was my adoption. I was adopted when I was only seven days old. I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. My parents told me that they wanted me so much and had several names picked out. As soon as they spoke the name, Catherine, my mother said I smiled real big. My first recollection of being told I was adopted was at the age of nine; however my mother said that she had constantly told me since day one, but I suppose I never understood until then. I had mixed feelings about being adopted and how it defined me as a person. During my adolescent years, I had a difficult time coping and sometimes acted out. I grew up with horses, and anytime I would get upset or stressed, I would go outside and ride. Her name was Cracker Jack because of her caramel color. She was my favorite horse, and she was a welch pony. She was so calm that I could ride her bareback. We would ride for hours and hours. Enjoying the calmness and serenity it seemed that I became one with nature. The gentle breeze blowing through the trees, the sound of nature listening to the singing birds, and the clip-clop of the hooves took all of my anxiety away for the moment. As I got a little older, my coping mechanism changed, and gymnastics became my obsession.
