A comparison of Cast Away and Gravity
When thinking about which movies to compare, I thought about current releases. Which movie had an emotional and visual impact? Instantly Gravity came to mind. When stripping down the film and finding its bear essentials, I quickly realized what it reminded me of: Cast Away.
Plot Comparison
Cast Away and Gravity have a similar plot: a huge accident, which forces them out of the norm and into a state of distress - then a need to overcome and escape. Both movies focus on a single character, who is isolated and forced to motivate and encourage themselves despite of circumstances. Monolog and facial expressions play a huge part, showing the audience a one-on-one story, which makes you relate and feel sympathy. In each case the main character must face their own mortality. Both characters have a point of desperation, of realization that they could die, acceptance that they are going die, and then both decide to fight for their own lives. In Cast Away, Chuck is desperate to get rescued and tries to seek any sort of help. When nothing comes, he gives up, and gives in to his surroundings and insanity. When failing his suicide attempt, he decides that he has to save himself, in order to get home. In Gravity, Ryan is insecure about her knowledge as an astronaut. She wants to be saved, and gives up when realizes that she is alone. She lies down to "go to sleep" and yet her inner strength (in form of imaginary George Clooney) empowers her to fight for survival. The personal conflict of finding strength from within is inspiring and moving to witness. This makes the audience root for the characters, rather than for someone (like the character of George Clooney) who is confident and calm. In both movies, we feel what the main characters feel, because it seems logical and something "we would
