Shutter Island Vs Butterfly Effect Essay

Superior Essays
In this essay I will be talking about the connections between two different psychological thrillers. The two movies I have chosen are, Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese and Butterfly effect directed by Eric Bress, J. Mackye Gruber. Both movies have significant differences and similarities which made it a good choice to compare them both using filming techniques. Shutter Island is a film that’s main character is Leonardo DiCaprio, this involves himself as Andrew Laeddis, at the Shutter Island mental institution and his journey to confront his own fears of his past life. Andrew then proceeds to create his own believe world where he becomes the hero but during the film reality starts to hit. Butterfly effect is also a physiological thriller …show more content…
During the shutter island costume plays a big part in the actual look of the film and characters, which helps build more knowledge towards what type of person the character is and also their past. The scene I will be looking at is the flashback seven in which Teddy sees his wife inside their old apartment building. This building represents a place that Andrew was happy, but his imaginations story of how his wife died. Andrew/Teddy believes that a patient at Shutter Island named Andrew Laeddis has set their apartment on fire with his wife inside. The scene shows his wife standing looking out the window at nothing waiting for Teddy to enter the room. Teddy walks towards her as she complains through dialog about how Teddy is never sober anymore, meanwhile holding alcohol that he had previously drunk. I chose this scene because the costume on his wife allows us to see what has happened in the past and how the director chose to show us small hints in towards the ending of the movie. Teddy’s wife wear a colourful and flowery dress which follows down to the ground. The colours used on the dress are an overall yellow with green leaves and red flowers amongst each other. The dress is shown many times throughout the movie to resemble his guild and trauma from his past but I feel as though this scene shows us more towards her character and what Teddy is going through. The scene begins to finish as Teddy, from behind, grabs a hold of …show more content…
Both the movies are structured very well and both Martin Scorsese and Eric Bress, J. Mackye Gruber did very well at choosing the main characters Teddy and Evan’s as they both can relate to each other in different ways. The techniques I used, such as costume is very alike with both films. Both scenes I had chosen were as in a relationship, say married with Teddy and Evan’s ex-girlfriend, therefore it shows the relationships linking to the characters. As using costume, it shows Teddy’s wife, with a colorful lovely dress on, yet the dress also symbolizes Teddy’s trauma through the flashback as the dress represents his children’s deaths. This is shown through the wetness of the dress. With butterfly effect this represents the trauma of Evan and Kayleigh’s childhood and how it can affect the present. This is shown through the costume of how she now dresses in the scene I have talked about. Linking these two films together went very well as they are so much alike but still very different in their own ways. Through mystery and trauma bring together the films and the main characters and allow me to product a piece linking them both

For decades, popular novels have been published and years later followed with a film. Although the movie tends to portray imagery, the course of events in the book tend to contrast to those of the film. This became abundantly clear when I read the book and watched the movie, The Natural. In both the novel and the film, we learn about the life of a baseball player named Roy Hobbs, who was born with a talent and was given the ability to pursue his goal of life. Although his mindset was determined to break all the records in the game, many obstacles stood in his path ultimately skewing his priorities and driving him towards a path only ending with failure.…

Outsiders: Movie v. Book S.E. was in high school when she wrote the book the Outsiders . Also fun fact about the movie is the scripts were taken right out of the book. I would say that the book was more effective, and had a lot more details. The movie was good but I didn’t like how they skipped a few parts that were in the book. While the book and movie have many similarities and differences, the ( book ) was more effective in telling the story.…

Out of the many short stories we have read over the past few weeks, the one that is most comparable to the movie “In The Time of the Butterflies” would have to be “The Slaughter House” by Esteban Echeverria. They both posses a similar message of covering the topic of the rule of a dictatorship, but in a couple of different ways. Despite the differences between Echeverria’s “The Slaughter House” and the movie adaptation of Julia Alvarrez’s novel, they both do a great job of depicting the reality of Latin America after colonial times and under the rule of tyrants. The theme of both works is most definitely the impact that a tyrannical rule of a dictatorship has on the people. However some noticeable differences between the two would have to be how Echeverria’s story covers how the people acted towards each other under the rule of the Rosas dictatorship in Argentina.…

If we compare the novel of “The Outsiders” that was written by S.E.Hinton and the film that was produced by Francis Ford Coppola, there will be many similarities and differences. One of the major differences is the different treatments to express some major themes. For example, Conflict between different social classes, conflict between siblings, the definition of family and the coming of age and maturation of teenage boy. The conflict between different social classes is based on several perspectives: Family background and the kind of people they talk with.…

The Lightning Thief The Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief movie was very disappointing after reading the book. The movie was very awful compared to the book. The two are so different that it’s hard to believe the writers even read the book before writing the movie. For instance, the plot was watered down and changed, the way they showed the characters was inaccurate, additionally the movie is missing many details and events that were included in the book.…

It can be a mood, an atmosphere, a formula, or a character dynamic. However, both Godard’s Breathless and Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction share huge resemblance to Film Noir, while at the same time introducing their own spin onto it. For instance, the characters follow a code, whether it be through impersonation, coincidence, or adherence to an archetype. Also, both films provide striking contrasts between the melancholy and the excitement, in Breathless’ case it would be the moments of reflection versus the constant avoidance of the law, whereas in Pulp Fiction’s case it would be ‘normal’ Los Angeles versus the dark world, full of drugs, violence, and deception. Lastly, both films encompass unconventional ways of unfolding the plot, whether it be through games with time, or with dramatic irony.…

The movie I have chosen for a film analysis is called, San Andreas which relates to an environmental disaster that is unpredictable and results in a serious effect on the environment (Warner Bros. Pictures, 2015). The San Andreas shows one fascinating aspect of American disaster film that presents two apocalyptic, an earthquake and a tsunami by addressing the most-commonly portrayed environmental disaster. Along with showing the powerful natural disaster, this film concentrates on informing catastrophe and post-apocalyptic disaster. To begin with, the San Andreas is set in the city of Los Angeles, with San Francisco Bay Area and follows the story of San Andreas fault. The main character of this film is named Raymond Gaines, who is a helicopter…
