Kowalski and Stone shared dialogue together in an opening scene where the big, bold planet earth was behind them captured by a medium-close shot. This gives indication of the strong mental health necessity the individuals needed have to deal with limited resources while being far away from civilisation. Another way this is shown throughout the film is after a spacecraft malfunctioned the distance between Stone and the closest escape pod was shown with a long shot, thus capturing the vast distance through space the character would have to cover. This enriches the brave and strong mental capabilities the character holds to overcome adversity. After a situation where Stone was running low on oxygen inside a space module, a rebirth of Kowalski appeared which ended up being just Stones imagination. Unlike most films, within Gravity the absence of sound was the same, if not more, effective than a crescendo at the climax of a problematic scene. Because of the silent space surrounding the characters at all times, music and audio was used smartly. This is noticed when an absence of sound an alarm or radio trying to reach a character and is considerably higher volume than anything previous, the audience is closely listening and can understand the situation with more depth. Used well when a fire is started within the space station where Stone is present, the alarm gains volume when the character finds herself getting closer to the beaming siren. When the fire was evaded, silence is used again with the sound of her breaths giving the audience an understanding of the complication the protagonist just encountered. The breaths being taken are amplified and gives a longer lasting effect of adversity to a viewer.
