The text’s of ‘Away’ by Michael Gow and ‘Into The Wild’ (2007) by Sean Penn explore the universal idea of discovery through the concept of uncovering what is hidden and reconsidering what is known. This is evident throughout both texts as the characters are removed from their dull and comfortable lifestyles and traveled away to rediscover their worlds with new eyes. While both texts explore the idea of discovery, the play ‘Away’ focus on how physical dislocations can lead to reflect on past experiences which offers individuals the opportunity to uncover what is hidden before it’s too late. In Michael Gow’s text, ‘Away’ we are introduced to the idea of greater self-discovery through overcoming life-defining obstacles on the three families journeys ‘away’, by uncovering what is hidden and reconsidering what is known. Within the play the protagonist, Tom, struggles to accept his approaching death as he tries to deny what is inevitable whilst attempting to keep that fact that he has recognised that something is wrong away from his parents. “They want me to think that I am going to be right as rain. They mustn't find out” By uncovering his illness he is able to find himself and realise what his role as the healer foreshadowed at the beginning of the play, “give me your hands… Robin shall restore amends.” By accepting his illness Tom is able to recognise the value of life and is prepared to share his insight with others.
