Staying healthy plays a big role in the way we live our lives. Teens in particular spend most of their time on an electronic device and many don’t get enough exercise. Keeping an active lifestyle has simple health benefits now and in the future, can decrease your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and has been proven to act as a stress reliever. To further my point, incorporating physical education to the high school curriculum has immediate and long lasting impacts on the way teenagers live their lives.
If you show teens the benefits of getting exercise now, they will continue these habits into later in their lives. Firstly, teenagers now do not get enough physical activity and this will continue on when they grow up. In 2011, the CDC showed that only 11% of teens actually met the requirements and got 60 minutes of physical activity. To explain, by implementing mandatory gym, students from JK-12 will get at least 60 minutes of physical activity for 5 days of the week, and these kids will grow up and continue this habit. Secondly, in a generation where more and more kids spend time on technology, obesity levels rise but this can change if a student is active through school. Having at least 18 minutes or more of physical activity a day can close to double the odds that an overweight child will become active and remain active throughout their lives.
