In my experience, all parents want their kids to be accepted by society. They want their kid that has a diagnoses to live a regular life. With having settings that include kids with disabilities it makes a “regular” life a reality for them. Enable for classrooms to have inclusion, we need the overall support not only from teachers, and administration, but from the other students in the room.
When special education kids attend class in a regular education class, I believe that a respect and an understanding can grow when the two worlds collide. With having inclusion in the classroom, families are happy that their child with a disability has just the same expectation with of coarse accommodations, as a student without a diagnoses. All in all, with an inclusion classroom all children learn by being together. We learn how to work with one another, to many times while I was growing up, the special education kids were in different rooms, and you knew who “they” were. Now that there is inclusion in the classroom, we have all learned how to get along, and not judge like we did at one time. Even if making accommodations day in and day out might be hard as a teacher, it is a necessity from this day forward that all schools need to include special education kiddos in their room. For us to continue the trend of inclusion, we need to invest year in and year out a team that can truly focus on the benefits from diversity and inclusion in the classroom. The numbers do not lie.
