The upstream approach refers to the use of social determinants such as population health needs and existing evidence of the previous failure and moving the intervention point to an earlier stage (RCN 2016). The benefits associated with the upstream approach refer to the effectiveness of interventions such as reducing the costs while improving the quality of care delivered. Education and continuous training are crucial for an optimum development of leadership and management skills. Peate (2012) emphasises the gap in preparing newly qualified nurses to work effectively and being competent in undertaking leadership roles while providing holistic patient care. Moreover, nurses need to possess not only the knowledge, but also the skills and competencies to provide the care to the NMC standards while managing the current health care system challenges (ibid). In conclusion, there were identified gaps in both, knowledge and nursing leadership and management skills and therefore the great need for training to shape the nurses from this
