Level 5 Leadership Concepts

The first nursing leader to impact my nursing practice was actually prior to my becoming a nurse. While employed as a Paramedic as a Federal Employee with the Army, I worked for Major Ron Moore. He exemplified the Level 5 Leadership Concepts developed by Jim Collins (Marquis, B. L., 2014). Upon completion of my nursing degree, the most influential nursing leader would be the influence of a surgical office nurse I worked with in a multiple specialty clinic. While both nurses possessed all of the leadership concepts Major Moore had the ability to meld military and civilian employees into a cohesive team capable of providing both routine and emergency care. Perhaps his greatest quality, as stated in Marquis, B. L. (2014) was that of Level 5: Great Leader, he possessed the unique blend of humility, he always placed the team and the patients first. His willingness to share his experience and knowledge is what influenced me to pursue nursing.
The surgery office nurse, while not in a direct designated leadership role, possessed years of experience in a variety of roles such as director of nursing and educator that allowed her to possess all 5 Levels Leadership Concepts. She provided a wealth of knowledge that many clinic nurses would seek out for information. She served

The act of health care does not entail just individuals during illness, but in wellness and prevention as well. In considering this, a patient focused environment will incorporate and foster the building of the 5 Levels of Leadership concepts. Health care does not occur in a vacuum, with the nursing shortage, nurses may be floated to different departments or find they will have to seek work in other areas. The capable leader will not only focus on the area of nursing in which they and the staff are working, but will seek to obtain knowledge and skills outside of their scope of
