What Horace stated is similar to the old proverb that states, "The greatest part of a person's character is shown when he is put through dark times." Without adversity, there are countries that wouldn't have been born, inventions that wouldn't have been made, and innovations that may not have occurred. Humankind can't live in a world without thinking that something is missing. They need to have a realization that there are parts of life that can be improved for themselves and the lives of others. We have ethics, ideals, and goals we push for. This is what Horace meant and the value of adversity on the "talents people have that would've otherwise had stayed
