In any type of journey, we will encounter a certain type of adversity that will try to get us off track and give up on our goals or dreams. As I think about what Horace stated and refer to my thinking, I come to agree with Horace’s statement: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” I come to agree that the hardships and the uncomfortable paths allow us to prosper and grow to achieve our goals.

Therefore, we are blissfully ignorant to our shortcomings and we are afforded endless opportunities; provided that we put forth the necessary effort. Unfortunately, in the distant, utopian future presented in Gattaca humans are genetically engineered to the most elite standard. Humans have been taught to be sole believers in competition and resentment with the next person. They prey on the next person's “greater life” without knowing their struggles that came with the other life. Soon one will start to have resentment for the minor things in their life and suddenly want more. One’s temporary satisfaction shows that they are greedy to have something that will not matter in the long run. Anything that we attempt to do may be thwarted by others. To act with “despair,” is to act without hope. Of course we should try to do what we can, but we shouldn’t be surprised when things don’t work out the way we want it to, and since we don’t have total control of what happens to us, we should at least exert control over how we feel and how we respond. Controlling how we feel is just as important as our actions. Don’t complain about things not going your way—just do your best.…
