In this film showing young girls’ family on process of getting their daughters to be married off or sell them off to begin prostitution career makes me feel desperate to be there to stop families from selling these girls. Knowing how normal it is for some countries to have young girls starting from age nine years old to start prostitution is sickening and terrifying. I just could not relate myself to them, and understand how they would feel because I have never experienced nor seen it in real life of these situations and I bet it would be much painful than how I imagine their lives would be. During the film, I was just surprised how some mothers are encouraging their daughters to begin prostitution, and even when school teacher was telling her that she can have better future earning more money without selling their bodies. The film Half the Sky showed different places that still holds the traditional sexist cultural mindset that stops women from being more educated than men, to be in higher place than men in terms of being CEO’s or more money earning jobs than men. The irony of this is that even if women from developed western countries who are known for equal chances and rights of both genders, we hardly see women taking more leading roles in the governments, or in the big industries compared to men. In Korea where I came from is well known for higher education where almost 90% of high school students graduate to go to college either you are male or female. Although women and men gets the same education and have the same qualifications to become a doctor or lawyers, we do not see many women out the society leading or having any power. President of South Korea is named by Park Geunhae, female. For only that reason many citizens despised our president for no reason and when she was elected many people thought she cheated. When I was on social media, I found the articles about how our President cheated the votes to make herself become presidents.
