Guns and Violence

I am doing my essay on guns and violence. This is one of the biggest debates anywhere right now. Gun ownership is at an all-time high. I agree with owning a gun. I own guns, but it is only for hunting or protecting my family. I agree guns in the hands of the wrong people is not a good thing. If the government decided to ban guns, they would still be available to the criminals through the black market. In surveys that were done by Wright and Rossi (1986) and Sheley and Wright (1995) they surveyed 12,000 robbery victims. Fifty-five percent of the robberies that took place in a business involved a gun. Guns were only used thirteen percent of the in noncommercial robberies. Furthermore, the ones that are targeted in robberies are women that are home alone or the elderly. Robberies are lease likely to target men, unless they are elderly. (Stolzenberg, Stewart)
The liberals and NRA are always arguing about who is right and who is wrong when it comes to guns. For liberals, the very term "gun violence" has been refined into some sort of natural force, completely detached from any identifiable root causes other than guns themselves--as if .45 semi-automatics, rifles, and high-capacity magazines. On the other side, hardcore NRA supporters and certain other Second Amendment support groups define guns and weaponry as not just the symbolic, but also the highest material expression of liberty, freedom, and moral rectitude.
