Incorporating effective communication, whether interpersonal, inter-professional, or the ability to provide good collaboration skills, is crucial to providing excellent, safe, and quality care to patients. The ability to communicate and connect, not only with patients and other health care professionals, can help build trusting relationships, prevent errors, and provide a higher level of care. I have worked very hard to remember to take the time to take a seat close to the patient, leaving anything that may be a distraction in another part of the room or in the hallway. When active listening, I believe a person seeks to understand and remember what the other person is saying, they evaluate and interpret what they hear that other person saying, and communicate what they understood was being said by reflecting back to the speaker in an empathetic manner. I also reflected on my own communication skills and this has shown me how I have developed over the past few years and the aspects I could improve as part of my professional development and listening was the major one. This has caused me to be more aware, even in my new position as Home Health Manager, when a staff member comes in my office, I have learned to make it a habit to give them my full attention, such as locking my computer and making and keeping eye contact with the staff member. This way I am not distracted and they know that I feel what they are saying is important. I have also gained knowledge from this experience of interpersonal communication by becoming more aware of the importance of providing appropriate information in helping to guide the patient and their family in the decision making process to make good choices regarding their healthcare which can be difficult as being in …show more content…

Consequently, good quality care depends upon professionals working collaboratively in interprofessional teams” (Matziou, V., Vlahioti, E., Perdikaris, P., Matziou, T., Megapanou, E., & Petsios, K., 2014, p.526). To apply this to in my current practice and in the future, I consistently participate in the weekly case conferencing meetings we have at our agency to discuss patients that we might share with other disciplines.
