Incorporating effective communication, whether interpersonal, inter-professional, or the ability to provide good collaboration skills, is crucial to providing excellent, safe, and quality care to patients. The ability to communicate and connect, not only with patients and other health care professionals, can help build trusting relationships, prevent errors, and provide a higher level of care. Communication is one of the most important aspects of nursing practice. Communication not only involves verbal and non-verbal communication, but also active listening. According to Kourkouta, L. and Papathanasiou, I.V. (2014), “Good communication between nurses and patients is essential for the successful outcome of individualized nursing care of each patient” (p.65). The following are two examples of how I have met the outcome of effective interpersonal and inter-professional communication.
My first experience is with a 72 year old male. He had been in and out of the hospital several times in a three month period and also, after speaking to some of his family, had been deteriorating in status over the past few months as well. I had reviewed his chart, including his past hospitalizations and lab reports to try to determine what the plan was for this gentleman. I could determine that his kidneys were failing, his blood pressure and blood sugars were very labile, and the multiple physicians on his case were often changing treatments and were often in disagreement with his…
