The Importance Of Communication In Health Care

Patients today have many different health needs and often require more than one health care team member of a different scope of practice. It is nearly impossible for one health care team member to address all problems associated with the patients’ health issues. The interprofessional education approach also known as IPE is considered to be a collaborative approach between team members. The team members had to show respect to each other’s practice and work together to achieve the best possible care for the patient. This IPE event offered a way for the health care team members to share their skills and knowledge with each other, the patient and the family members. When the health care team members, family members, and the patient often portray their thoughts and feelings, there are two methods of communication which are demonstrated. These include; verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. The members within the simulation had demonstrated various effective and ineffective types of communication. The first example of an effective verbal communication skill is shown by the members of the meeting was being empathetic. The first ineffective non-verbal technique demonstrated was shown by the Registered Practical Nurse. Appearance was shown to be an issue with the RPN. The way the team members dressed had to be professional attire and respectable so that the patient and family knows you are there to listen and actually care about the concerns they had. The RPN had not taken off their jacket. This non-verbal cue demonstrated to the patient and family member that the RPN most likely did not want to be there or care about the concerns associated the issues at hand.
