This week’s experience at the clinic evoked the reflections on communication problems between healthcare team members and the patient. The patient recovering from total hip arthroplasty (THA) has received the physical therapy and afterwards was diagnosed with hip dislocation. The patient and the therapist knew she will be taken for x-ray; however, she was not contraindicated to exercise by a physician or physical therapist. The circumstances of this event made me reflect on the actions that could be done to prevent this scenario in future.

The question in this problem is whether the miscommunication had lead to inappropriate outcomes for this patient and could it be prevented or at least facilitated to ease outcome. First of all, the lack of clarity could lead to misunderstanding between communicators. During the therapy session, when I asked the pain level and if the patient knows her hip precautions, she could not remember all of them. It is the first sign that she was not clearly instructed earlier on the importance of hip precautions and danger of dislocation. Therefore, the clinicians always have to remember that everyone is different and does not process or remember the information the same way. “Where, with whom, and under what circumstances the dialogue or conversation takes place can have a profound influence on the process and outcomes of the interaction” (162). Secondly, it is important that the clinicians explain the situation and goals to the patient in patient’s terms
