Setting: The study took place in a hospital that consist of: a 33 bed PCU which provides treatment to medical and interventional cardiology patients, a 6 room electrophysiology laboratory, and a 6 room cardiac catheterization laboratory.
2. Subjects/Sample size/Selection: The study focused on patients from PCU who had medical and interventional cardiac procedures done. A sample size was not identified. However, the study did average that the number of procedural patients is anywhere between 30 and 50 daily.
3. Research design: In the study a handoff group was formed and determined what information should be communicated and how the information should be available. The tool began as a paper form and after piloting the paper tool for 6 weeks, in formal verbal data was collected to measure compliance with and usability of the tool. The tool consisted of patient demographics, initial diagnoses, procedures performed, medical history, allergies, catheter access sites, vital signs, and cardiovascular device settings. The form also contained an open comment box for nurses to document other useful patient information. The paper form was then converted into an electronic version. The effectiveness of the tool was measure using a pre-post implementation survey distributed to all staff RNs on the units
