‘Successfully managing diversity can lead to better performing employees and potentially better financial performance for an organisation’.


The composition of today’s workforce is changing as companies expand across boundaries and increased globalisation facilitates the movement of labour from one country to another. Modern companies comprise employees of varying ethnicity, languages, cultural background, sexual orientation and even age as there are even older persons opting to remain in the workforce. Despite this cosmopolitan mix companies have to ensure performance is optimal and business profitable.

What is Diversity?

Daft (2012) describes Diversity as all the ways in which employees differ. Traditional models of diversity took into consideration race, gender, lifestyle, pay level, disability and age. Esty, et al., (1995) also describes diversity is as acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing, and celebrating differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status. All of which can be found in today’s modern workforce.

Novartis values diversity and views it as essential to business and has taken the necessary steps towards creating a working environment that places emphasis on diversity and incorporating different values and perspectives into the organisation. The aim is to have all employees feel respected and believe that they are contributing meaningfully to the company. The potential that harnessing diversity holds includes enhancements to business relationships, stimulating greater innovation among staff, setting the stage for the company to become a premier employee by attracting and retaining talent and of course high levels of productivity (Novartis.com, 2015).
