Diversity in the Workplace

When we think of diversity we may think of different colors of skin, or maybe different backgrounds of origin. However diversity is so much more. In historic times white men where the world’s leaders, within the workforce. There are some who helped shape our managerial environment. We had great men like Maslow who was the father of hierarchy of needs. Which is a theory in psychology which subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. With this theory we understood the needs basis for the blue collar employee, and how to communicate from the bottom to the top. As time went on, you saw more and more women demanding equal rights, and equal pay especially in the 60’s and 70’s. You also had what was called the baby boom in the 60’s, which in turn a lot of those children are now in the 50’s plus years old, so employers are now considering older employees. Which is a form of diversity that most never think of. With women entering the workforce, and older employees being considered it forces laws and rules to come into play, or to be created. The workforce has no longer a stayed a man’s world. Within the 80’s and beyond we have seen a big number of ethnic, and racial diversity. This mean that more women, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians were taking a more leadership role within the workforce environments, and the white man was becoming less of a majority. In addition, with all this diversity, laws and agencies had no choice but to be created, that allowed employees to work, and not feel uncomfortable within the working environment or be taken advantage of by white workers that felt they has no place within the workforce. These laws and agencies are more known as Title VII, and the EEOC. Title VII is that discrimination cannot be used with the hiring and firing of a person in a protected class. A protected class is a person of race, religion, national origin, age, and sex. For example, an employer can’t tell a potential employee that she cannot be hired because she happens to be a black women, which is from Africa who is over
