The chosen article considered the racial differneces in employee turnover rate, and examined if the diversity climate, especially the perception of that climate, was correlated to the before mentioned turnover rate. The first hypothesis of the study was if a “pro diversity work climate” (P. McKay, et. al., 2007) would have a negative correlation, in level of strengths greatest to least, with Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites. The second hypothesis was that the organizational commitment would help with the correlation between the perceptions of the race and diversity climate, and turnover rates. The researchers discovered that the hypotheses were partially supported; turnover rates and the diversity climate were negatively correlated, and the strongest correlation begin with Blacks, but Whites had a stronger correlation than Hispanics. The researchers had 6,823 managerial employees from 50 different departments of major retail stores (P. …show more content…
The researchers used the survey scores to conduct chi-square and standard deviation tests, as well as the mean. The data was presented in neat tables. The researchers also did well in admitting that they were somewhat wrong with the predictions made in their hypotheses, as the diversity climate only accounted for 15%-4% of the variance in turnover intentions (P. McKay, et. al., 2007). Some major problems of the study was how the survey was administered and the amount of groups being analyzed. The survey was administerd by email which could potentially make the survey more informal, and 15 questions is not a large basis to make calculations from. Also, the researcher were mainy concerned with Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites, so they should have only surveyed those belonging to these groups; the other race groups are extraneous variables. Lastly, there was a disproportional amount of whites participants compared to the other groups

It has been discovered that diversity can negatively affect organizational processes and performance. Stereotyping and affective conflict arise out of a diverse workforce, and thus affecting turnover (Pelled, 1996; Jehn, Northcraft, & Neale, 2000; Tsui). Empirical evidence suggests that in-group demographic preference exists in organizations (Allen & Wilder, 1976; Brewer, 1979; Tajfel, 1982).This has the tendency to lead to groupings, for example the same race or sex within the wider group. Tsui and associates (1992) discovered that diversity results in white male employees detaching from the wider group.…
