Delay Entry Into School

After reading the text, and the Connecting Developmentally Appropriate Practice to Brain research, I agree that it is never a good thing to delay a child's entry into school. When a child is delayed, whether it is thought they are not prepared enough or they have not turned 5 years by a certain date, they are missing out on crucial learning during a time when the brain is developing and rewiring to hold on to important information and get rid of useless information. When a student is not challenged enough they may lose some of the information they need to hold onto. Thus if a delay in entering school happens, the student will be at an even bigger disadvantage. Our text suggested a two year kindergarten that is designed for those students who turn 5 in the fall of their kindergarten year. It is a way to meet the needs of students who are typically delayed because of their age, as it readies them for kindergarten and it …show more content…
If they are already at a disadvantage, this means they are not being challenged and learning as they should at home. Delaying their entry into school becuase they are not "ready" only delays their learning of the skills they need to enter school. There is a reason they are not ready, either economical, learning disability, other disabilty, ELL student, culturally, or access to materials, thus delaying them continues the delay in their learning that they are already experiencing.
Those who are disadvataged now have more access to a preschool education than before. However, once they leave preschool they may still not be "ready" for kindergarten by the standards of the school. There can be a multitude of reasons why a student may seem not ready for kindergarten but that does not mean that they should be delayed. They still need that challenge or else they will not grow and potential learning difficulties and other delays may come to
