Explain Why High School Should Start Later Essay

High school students are expected to sit through 7 hours of instruction, complete 2-4 hours of homework, have a social life, be active in their family, and get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep all in one day. Now with studies showing teenagers experience a change in their internal clocks, there has to be some adjustment made. Students are having a harder time waking up and falling asleep early enough to be prepared for school. To help students cope with this change in their internal clocks; high schools should begin later, and end later in the day. Hearing an alarm clock go off at 6:30 in the morning is an awful and discouraging sound. Waking up before the sun has risen only to go sit in a plastic chair to learn information completely irrelevant to your intended future career is not an …show more content…
If school was adjusted to suit the needs/wants of students, there would be an overall better attitude towards the school system, and students would try harder. It's common sense; make school more enjoyable for the students and they won't resent the system or refuse to do the assigned work, and the overall performance of the students will increase! If students are doing better in that school, the teachers will look a lot better as well. Starting school later would, directly and indirectly, make the entire school perform and look a lot better than schools that begin at an earlier time. School is supposed to teach responsibility that should be applied to each students adult life, but with teens experiencing a change out of their control, school should at least try to help the students. It would be a huge adjustment for some, but an adjustment worth making. Starting school later would increase student participation, better the attitude towards going to school, and make everyone in the school perform better.
