Too early
There are plenty of risks caused by not getting enough sleep for your age, such as being more likely to be overweight, depressive symptoms, and perform poorly in school and activities. That being said, the CDC reports that less than 1 in 5 school in the United States start before 8:30, which is what they recommend schools start at. While teachers would benefit from the extra sleep themselves, they also would see students be more attentive in the morning because they would not be as tired. Ergo, Schools should start later than 8:30 because students and teachers would benefit in health from getting extra sleep, and would benefit from being more attentive and awake in the morning.

In a Washington Post article, it talks about a survey held in Montgomery county, where almost half of the counties teachers took part. the survey was about the later start times for school, and 63% of the survey takers said that making the school start later would not have any impact on academic achievement. This idea of there being no academic improvement from later school start times is false, as it has already been proven that students do benefit in grades because of the extra rest they recive from schools starting later. It is also said in the report that parents along with activists are pushing to get school start times later, so it is not only students, but their families too that want this change. It seems like most of the opposition for the later school times is coming from the schools themselves, instead of the families who all agree that they want this change. It seems illogical to ignore the evidence that shows benefits to students, but for one reason or another most schools have decided to keep their early start

In “Our Kids need more sleep”, by Valerie Erde, it is explained that children need more sleep to do well in school. It has a couple of studies that say that children with more sleep do better in school, and are more alert in general. I completely agree with the author. I feel that if middle to high school students were allowed more time to sleep, it would improve most aspects of their life during school days. I know for sure that on the weekends, when I sleep in, I am in an all around better mood, and I am alert and ready for the day.…

If students start earlier then they get to leave earlier (classroom.synonym.com). This opinion is false because even if school will still begin at the same time as usual and kids will still be tired. Even if school did start earlier it would not be worth it for kids and teenagers because they need more sleep, which would mean they would need to go to bed earlier in the evening to get in a full eight hours. With sports, homework and other activities it is not possible for kids to go to bed early enough to get up in the morning. This would only be more harmful, even if it meant getting to leave school earlier.…
