Volunteer work can be enriching and daunting experience, especially for those who have to adapt themselves to the situation. Through my interaction with individuals in a long-term care facility, I have gotten to look at things from a different perspective. As a Certified Nurse Assistant, you have a job to do which unfortunately only allows for one to show so much empathy, while still remaining professional. Being able to step back, and interact with individuals helps in developing a better transactional communication, as in, what we do with others. All while partaking in conversations working through both internal, and external noise we encounter in one’s interpersonal communication through shared environments. (Adler &Proctor, 2015, p. 12). Internal noises can consist of whether I am talking loud enough, do I need to help them, or will that make them upset that I am fussing over them. The external noise that can cause problems includes pages over the intercom system, and those talking louder than you. Environments I feel played a large role while interacting with those around me. However, I do feel more comfortable with those of a similar gender or culture. Implementing perception checking into my process is a beneficial step in communication. Paying particular attention to behaviors, interpret the behavior keeping a few ideas in mind, and clarifying them with the other person can help with clarification (Adler & Proctor, 2015, p. 123). In cases such as these, it helps to avoid conflict, retaining one’s dignity, and avoiding the added tension of not knowing, a face-saving technique (Adler & Proctor, 2015, p.126). I find many times it may be hard to read people like a lady crocheting but in turn, hesitates when asked if she enjoys doing that in her free time.
