Effective Communication In Health And Social Care

Effective communication in a care setting helps both the care worker and the service users form a good relationship and helps workers work well together. People mostly communicate effectively when they feel relaxed and also able to empathise with the other person. In this essay we will look at the importance of communication and the impact of effective and ineffective communication on the service user, also overcoming barriers to communication and skills needed for effective communication. This assay will also elaborate communication theory and issues relating to equality and diversity, right and legislation.

Alan also feels that he has lost the outside world which could be very helpful if Alan had his family come in to see him regular or even have the nurses give him some newspapers to read and help him use the internet to contact family or just to keep up with the world outside. Alan should be supported to express himself to overcome his communication barriers. One of the barriers that Alan was facing was that he was losing social strength of being part of a community, the communication barrier that Alan was facing would have been overcome by having Alan’s care worker have him doing something for the community and being part of the community, this could have gave him the chance to say his views about what he feels being left out of the community and also have the care worker reassure him that he is still part of the community and that people respect him as a leader of it. This then helps Alan gain back his confident of being part of something and feel that he is thought about and cared for. Alan care worker could have also gave him the chance to have some time with trained staff that can assist him in his skills of how to communicate and feel free to express himself in a way that he does not feel his bothering someone. These messages could be verbal or non-verbal. This then helps Alan feel safe to be able to form some kind of relationship and also develop self-esteem, however poor communication can make a person feel vulnerable and worthless or even emotionally threatened.
