An example of effective therapeutic communication that I had with a resident this week was when a resident appeared to be saddened in regards to his lack of mobility. The therapeutic communication techniques that I incorporated into this situation included silence, a cautious touch, and statements directing towards acceptance. Silence and touch were the techniques used to allow the resident to express their feelings and provide a comfort factor to the conversation. Statements of acceptance that I provided throughout this communication included, “I can see why your situation could be frustrating.” This acceptance technique allowed the resident to feel acknowledged of his coping in regards to his lack of independence.
