REFLECTIVE ESSAY

This is reflective essay based on the interview of patient and experience of mine in intensive clinical placement this semester. The aim of this essay to explore, develop and analyse the communication based of therapeutic relationship between health professionals and patients. This essay also explores the effectiveness and importance of verbal and non-verbal communication between nurse and patient. For effective self-evaluation and reflection, I will be using Gibbs (1988) reflective model as it is useful in critical analysis of an incident (Singh & Jiva, 2014). In order to maintain confidentiality of patient, I will be using the name ‘Mr. Brown’ to discuss about them as per the code of professional conduct devised by NMBA (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2010).
Description

The other people have not reacted well to him as he had difficulty in speaking. On one hand, the good thing about the experience was the effective verbal as well as non-verbal communication. The communication does not include difficult medical jargons and it allowed the patient to answer open ended questions. Furthermore, eye contact, gestures and appropriate facial expressions promoted the therapeutic based relationship and it allowed the patient to answer effectively what he thinks (O'Hagan et al., 2014). On the other hand, the bad thing about the experience could be the way other nurses reacted to him. Fortunately, the situation was resolved due to effective communication by devoting some time to know the reasons for his anxiety and

However, there were moments where I felt lost at what to contribute to the conversation. At times I said things that were most likely nontherapeutic. This interaction with the patient was not perfect, but I think it was good for my first try.…

The Therapeutic Relationship [247 words] In Tom’s case to initiate building rapport a quiet room should be found in the health care settings. This will allow Tom and the nurse to respect each other’s personal space. Hence, Tom can be more relaxed and feel safer, which will also be beneficial regarding his anxiety (Happell, Cowin, Roper, Lakeman, & Cox, 2013, p. 300). Furthermore, communication techniques such as active listening can also be used by paying attention, responding and giving appropriate feedback, which will allow Tom to express his feelings and the nurse to interpret his non-verbal clues (Parbury, 2013, p. 209).…

The effects of taking my time with Mr X I believe gave an opportunity to building a therapeutic relationship between myself and the patient. This is key to developing mutual trust and respect. Therapeutic relationships can be built by using good communication skills which also promotes person centred care, communication which could include verbal and non-verbal on a one to one basis which may have been more beneficial for Mr X to fully understand what was about to happen to overcome the communication barrier which may have been caused by his dementia condition or simply that he didn’t hear properly. The last and for me the most interesting course of our MBA program was “Creative Problem Solving and Consultancy Project” because actually, we were working on real projects that had been taken from business. My learning outcomes and feelings from this course I will discuss further in my reflection of the project. Gibbs’ reflective cycle will be used as it is a popular model for reflection. The model includes 6 stages of reflection and is presented below as cited in Dye (2011). Figure 1.…

Nurses are expected to continue developing their skills and gain more knowledge throughout their careers; the RCN (2010) defines this as lifelong learning. Two of the most fundamental contributing areas of learning are clinical placement and theory. Being able to link the two together is an essential skill; this is emphasized by Cope et al (2000). Focusing on these two aspects, this essay is going to explore and analyse the extent of learning in the subject area of personal care and the links to other important factors of nursing.…

This reflective piece focused on the patient care delivery that I was directly involved during my third-year clinical placement in a recovery unit of a local National Health Service (NHS) Trust. Driscoll reflective model would be used in the analysis of this care episode. My rationale for selecting Driscoll`s reflective model is because of the three-prompt questions (What? So what? and Now what?) generates a more, important reflective development by inspiring a much deeper analysis that causes for the future action plan…

I felt I did not communicate effectively with the patient during a difficult time. The atmosphere was tense in the room and perhaps saying the right thing may have helped but I did not know the right thing to say. I felt anxious not knowing how to console Teresa. This lack of confidence to communicate and deal with the situation made me uncomfortable and frustrated with myself .I felt uneasy leaving the room. I wished I had been more mentally prepared for the situation so I could have said something comforting and reassuring.…

Conclusion Effective communication and the use of therapeutic communication in the patient care setting is a pivotal part of the nurse-client relationship, as well as ensuring patient safety by communicating clearly with other healthcare members. Proper communication is a skill that may come naturally to some people. For those nurses that do not have efficiency in communication, practicing will help in feeling confident in communicating with patients and staff as well as providing a solid platform for quality patient care. The Nursing Process Model is a conceptual framework in which the nurse-patient relationship is the foundation of the nursing process. The purpose for this framework for critical thinking is to diagnose and treat human responses to potential or actual health problems. The nursing process is represented as dynamic and relational, the nurse and the patient being affected by each other 's behavior and by the environment around them. Each successful two-way communication is termed a "transaction" and can be analyzed to determine the factors that promote transactions. The constraints the various systems in the environment (personal, interpersonal, and social) place on the development of the relationship are also examined.…

This essay will use the Gibbs Reflective Cycle (Gibbs, 1998) and will look at a specific event that happened during my placement and the role of NHS Education for Scotland (NES, 2012) 10 Essential Shared Capabilities (ESC 's) and how Module 3, Involving People relates to the event which occurred. Description The 10 ESC 's (NES, 2012) is a resource that was created to ensure high quality care is provided to all, that the care is non-discriminatory and that it is person centred. It should be used as a tool by nurses to help improve their own care. During placement with the health visitors, I met with a situation which is covered by the 10 ESC 's Involving People module, which centres around involving people with their care (NES, 2012).…
