College Admissions Essay: How Writing Has Changed My Life

For as long as I can remember, movies and television have been my escape. No matter what was going on in my life, I could always get lost in the fantastical adventures of Star Wars or even the mundane happenings in The Office. With each new story that I consumed, my mind created five more. For me, writing just started out as a way for me to clear all of these thought-tangents out of my head. I would keep random journals everywhere and just jot down whatever came to me throughout the day. I did not fully realize that I wanted to pursue writing, specifically screenwriting, until my freshman year at college. I was constantly being barraged with questions from family and friends about what I wanted to do with my life and one day it finally clicked: …show more content…
While I believe that my specialty does tend to be writing scripts for movies, I decided to make the project I am working on a television series in order to give me the opportunity to give the story endless more directions that I would normally be allowed in say a 120 minute film. This series would be a semi-autobiographical story based not only on my college experience, but more specifically on the place that I work: University of Maryland Athletics Facilities, Operations, and Events. Following in stride with countless other popular shows such as The Office and Parks and Recreation, I would also have my show be expressed in a mockumentary fashion. While it may seem that these types of shows are becoming overdone, I think having the perspective be from that of college students would give it a fresh new look while also added to its brilliance. I also believe that there is a utter lack of visual art depicting what college is actually like. Every film or show you see basically only focuses on the partying and relationship aspects of it, which honestly only account for possibly 20% of the actual experience. While my series would mainly be light-hearted and deal with the way students have to maintain classes, work, a social life, and their health, I would also want to use it as a platform to discuss serious issues, such as the effects of depression and anxiety

I currently live in a small beach town right outside of Jupiter, Florida known as Hobe Sound. It’s a “drive by town” as I would describe it. There really isn’t anything there would attract or gravitate people to stay there; its better to just look at it out a car window well passing it. It is currently about six hours outside of Tallahassee, Florida. This seems really long, but originally I signed to go to University of Mississippi and later realized that being more than ten hours away from home was to much for me.…

Writing has impacted my life and allowed me to look at books differently. After realizing all the work and effort that went into creating an elaborate story, I gained a better appreciation for how much authors do in order to present such amazing stories. I feel that I have a vast amount of respect for writers, but I also feel that writing is a chore and I tend to shy away from it. I have had some amazing English teachers that have really helped me grasp certain aspects of the writing process.…

When I was a child, most of my time was spent on the computer. I wasn’t very interested with the physical computer, rather I was interested in everything the computer could do. It was more fun for me to tinker with the settings than to play games. As I got older in elementary school, I discovered website and game building sites. I built sites on my computer for everything from a fake business that sold toys to a page to host all the pictures from my semi-annual Barbie fashion shows.…

For some people, writing is difficult and it can become stressful to write about topics you have no interest about; for me it’s the contrary, I have always had good fluency when it comes to write about any topic, even if it doesn’t interest me, this is mainly because I take it as a new challenge or an opportunity to have a more in deep look about the certain topic; I use this not only for writing but every time I get tasked with something new, for example back when I was in the marine recruit training more commonly known has boot camp, it’s a requirement to learn how to shoot a rifle with outstanding accuracy, for me this was something completely new since I had never held a rifle before and it hadn’t really caught my attention until…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…

Before college I could’ve easily convinced myself that I knew everything I needed to know about life and I was the person I’d be for the rest of my years to come; I was wrong. In high school I was known as the student who never needed to study in order to get good grades, unfortunately that changed once I entered college. College opened my eyes academically, socially and more importantly it introduced me to different aspects of life and myself. Everyone tells you that college is a different experience, but you never really understand until you enter college yourself.…
