AP Computer Science: Personal Statement

When I was a child, most of my time was spent on the computer. I wasn’t very interested with the physical computer, rather I was interested in everything the computer could do. It was more fun for me to tinker with the settings than to play games. As I got older in elementary school, I discovered website and game building sites. I built sites on my computer for everything from a fake business that sold toys to a page to host all the pictures from my semi-annual Barbie fashion shows. Although the technology at my fingertips was getting stronger, my interest in computers was overtaken by my love for the arts in middle school. I began to explore creative writing and movie making. My parents encouraged me to join robotics, but all the boys were doing that, so I kept at my passion for reading and writing. I became passionate about making short films. My favorite part of creating the films was writing the script. There was a beauty to bringing all the parts of together in a logical fashion to create a compelling story. Computers weren’t completely absent on my path to artistic expression though; I arbitrarily pulled them back into my life when I decided on a whim to take AP Computer Science last year. When I signed …show more content…
There were nine girls in the entire school taking the class. The boys made fun of the female teacher for only having a degree in computer science from a state university. I wanted to prove to them so badly that I could be just as good as them while facing these adverse circumstances, but I was sporting the scarlet letter ‘B’ on my report card well into the year. No matter how hard I studied, I couldn’t grasp the concepts and the specifics of the programming language. I kept trying to delve into the mathematical side of the subject, to no avail. If couldn’t prove myself in this one subject, how could I contribute to making a difference for my

Whether the world wants to admit it or not, the internet has truly taken over our brains. Not in the sense of complete control, but it does change the way that we think. In The Shallows, Nicholas Carr describes his view on the matter along with many interesting facts to back up his reasoning. He has concluded that internet use switches how some things work in our brains. He debates throughout the book whether this change is harmful or helpful towards how the mind works, but he ultimately decides that the thought process of our society is changing.…

In order to learn we have to know when its correct to use the web we have to learn how to limit ourselves and set standards because if we don’t we will soon be living in a life of “brighter software and dimer users, just like Carr states” (216). When it should really be the other way around we have to remember we are the users and computers should only be our tools not the item we think is indispensable. Reading The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr has made me more aware of the time I spend on the net. I don’t want the net to take over the way I think or act. For that reason, I will try to limit the amount of time I spend on the web, as well as limit my sons time on the web.…

Project: Personal Knowledge Plan As a major in computer science, with minimal knowledge about computers, I have a plethora of ignorance on the subject. I am hoping to have a bachelors in computer science after 4 years at UNF, and the deciding factor in my major of choice is the fact that it encompasses a wide variety of jobs that typically pay a substantial wage and decent opportunities for location of work. These options would allow me to find an area I enjoy in a place I like with a comfortable life. However, getting to the end of education poses a challenge considering how far I have to go and how much there is to learn between me and the end.…

    Sexism Against Women

As a student, my personal goals have always consisted of having a career as a Computer Software Engineer majoring in Computer Science. Unfortunately, females are a minority in this field. There's an ongoing list of situations that any woman may encounter while pursuing this major, including working harder to prove a point that ladies can excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses and being negatively affected by sexism against female engineers simply because we are from the relatively small percentage. Regardless of the circumstances, I will continue as a strong, efficient worker while being underestimated. Auspiciously, I have the courage to take on the task head first.…

As one ages, hobbies may change, but for me, languages and technology have been a constant interest. My fascination with languages began in first grade when I thought languages were similar to cyphers and involved only letter-to-letter translation. By second grade, I learned this belief was untrue, but I still held a love for languages. Similarly, I did not completely understand how computers functioned, but I still loved discovering the underutilized features of Word and PowerPoint. I was unaware I would have the ability or opportunity to combine these interests, but high school presented me with the opportunity to unite the two hobbies.…

Truthfully, working in academia just recently became a passion of mine. Originally, I went into my undergraduate career intending to work as a video game developer; however, as I spent more time in the field of computer science, I began questioning this career choice. Particularly, during my sophomore year, one course exposed me to the lifestyle of a video game developer. Ultimately, I realized I did not enjoy this lifestyle or work environment. As a result, I began questioning what I wanted to do in life.…

Before coming to SCTC I had no idea of what I wanted to do after graduating high school. In fact, I was not sure I wanted to attend SCTC at all. I had heard about the programs that were offered and was sort of interested in the Digital Graphic Arts course, but I had not had much experience with art on the computer. I was very good at drawing and painting, so my art teacher suggested that I apply for the program. He made it clear that I could learn many things at SCTC that he would not be able to teach me in Madison.…

Statement of Purpose “How do we ask the turtle to trace out a circle? Remember, it only knows how to walk in straight lines and turn around.” Playing with the Logo turtle on screen in sixth grade was my first exposure to computer science. I was immediately fascinated by the idea of approximating a smooth circle with a regular polygon of, say, 360 sides. Staring at the “circle” on screen, I could not quite digest the fact that it was something produced in a fundamentally different way compared to the one I could draw with a pair of compasses, though neither of which was ever close to being the perfect, mathematical circle that probably does not exist in the physical world.…

I first got introduced to computers when I was quite young, I followed my dad to work and within a few minutes I had successfully crashed the PC, typical windows. Within a year we got a pc at home and within a day I crashed that one as well. I don’t know exactly what I did to it, but someone the operating system was couldn’t restore itself to a working state automatically and we had to call someone over to fix. So as you can probably guess I was banned from even touching the computer till further notice. Eventually I started learning about computers in school…

I thought up, drew 8-bit sprites, coded the physics, implemented unique level dependent challenges, tested gameplay and functionality, and spent well over 20 hours on my own video game about gravity on other planets. My work paid off when it took me to a first place finish at the state competition in TSA. I’ve also worked with a college professor at Virginia Tech as he showed me how computers in his labs communicate with and track satellites. That opened my eyes to things I would have never thought about, but shows me the capabilities of computing in the modern time. All these things in my life, computers allowed me to do.…
