Personal Narrative: How Literacy Changed My Life

Improved Essays
The impact that Literacy has had on me, made me the person I am today. When I write or read I go into a different world, my mind and body go free. When I write I have the ability to say anything that pops to my head. Growing up my dad introduced me to poetry, he even had one of his poems published. My dad wrote a poem about me called “Little Man”. I often think to myself as I sit in my room about becoming a writer, my dad always says you can accomplish anything you set your mind to, anything is possible. So, after I thought about it, I decided to start writing stories to my mom and dad, when I finished them, my parents thought they were really good so good in fact that if I wanted to I could publish them. My dad was the one who has influenced …show more content…
Although I struggled with it, I manage to push through it everyday, I never wanted to give up. Even though I felt like giving up, I told myself “DON’T EVER GIVE UP”. So, as long as I try and keep my grades up, I’ll do just fine. I have a good aspect with Literacy. I remember my freshman year at Chrisman in my English 1 class, I would take writing essays or poems and I would get a perfect score on them. Even though I hated writing at some point, I learned to learn my skills in Literacy. I really enjoy to write. I loved the feeling of flowing thoughts coming out of my head, and then onto my sheet of notebook …show more content…
Even from reading from plays parts, short readings, even a paragraph. Those are types of reading stuff that I don’t like. Like in my English 3 class at Fort. We just finished the movie, “The Crucible”. Tremendous play and movie. I loved every part of it, but back to the point. While our class was reading this play, most of our class developed the skill of reading and writing skills: test about parts of the play. But, I will admit when I do read, I stutter when I read. I feel all the pressure, when i have to read in front of my class. That is an aspect I have when I have to read. Rather than having my teacher read our part, we have to read, and I’m sure most students in my 1st hour class go through the same thing. I’ll be honest when I just read, like kinda of a Free-Write, I really just want to speak aloud my words on my paper. It helps me, see if the writing piece sounds correct. I believe this idea helps me with my love for Literacy (writing). One thing about my Free-Write I do when I have free time in my class is being able to literally cut loose, like a bull coming out of his cage. Being able to just cut loose and attack the page with my words, gives a good impact for Literacy. This style of writing creates a warm and good feeling inside of me when I

As I grew older, I started to dislike reading because it just seemed boring to me to read the books or novels we had to read in school. Although, I did enjoy to read my own personal books that I checked out from the library, reading was just something I didn’t have much interest for as I did for writing. I greatly enjoyed writing. Most of the writing I have done, whether it be academic or informal, has always had a touch of a personal experience and emotion. I have loved the feeling of calculating thoughts and getting them down on paper.…

I like to believe that when I write for mainly school I'm a good writer because I spend lots of time to actually figure out what I'm going to say, it's not easy to just have a topic and go off that. I feel as if I'm an average writer, someone who writes at least monthly but doesn't want to write everyday. One time when I was in the 5th grade we had a program called young author where you got to create a story and you had to put it in a book. You also had to color pictures in it. Basically a children's book…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

Literacy Journey Like most people, my literacy journey started at a very young age, but at the age of twelve I had to start all over again. I had never thought of my literacy journey until now, and I figured that I actually have two literacy journeys. I was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, but my family and I lived at Mexico City. At a very young age, when I was around three years old, my big brother was already attending pre-k and I remember accompanying my mom every school day to drop my brother off at school, and begging her to let me stay in school with him.…

This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing. I had it set in my mind at which there was no purpose behind literacy. I just saw it as lines smothered together and people would proclaim them as “literature”.…
