Personal Narrative: Going Through Elementary School Reading

Improved Essays
Going through elementary school reading was always a struggle for me. It was challenging for me to fully comprehend what we were doing and reading in the class. Every friday I would go to see a teacher one on one to practice reading it involved being timed and having to tell her everything I had just read so that it would build up my comprehension. I remember feeling very embarrassed to be pulled out of class for extra help. Going through that didn't help that much, I was missing class and I already had trouble comprehending things which then just made it harder for me to get caught up in the class. It didn't end there in middle school I would go see a tutor everyday after school. This is when I felt it started to impact me it made me feel …show more content…
I like to believe that when I write for mainly school I'm a good writer because I spend lots of time to actually figure out what I'm going to say, it's not easy to just have a topic and go off that. I feel as if I'm an average writer, someone who writes at least monthly but doesn't want to write everyday. One time when I was in the 5th grade we had a program called young author where you got to create a story and you had to put it in a book. You also had to color pictures in it. Basically a children's book and I had so much fun doing it. I wrote about a girl who when camping and lost her family, my book was in the top five of my class. I remember feeling so good about it. Then during high school we would write essays constantly which is not that much fun when you're not getting hot grades on then my teacher was very strict and unfair about her grading. Nobody seemed to understand. I wish I could have understood why I got the grades I did for my papers but she would never had time outside of class. She was more of and oh well you get what you get kind of person which was unfair and not very helpful. After I complete this course I would like to be able to write a great college essay so that when I have to write them in the future they are well written and very

I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

I struggled in Pre-K not because I was not engaged in the learning material but because of a language barrier. Spanish was spoken at home so I was not familiar with the English language. Therefore, I was considered an English language learner. However, I slowly started to understand simple principles such as the alphabet. This was a milestone because I would then be able to differentiate between the letters and sounds.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

By adding up the amount of pages that I read and dividing it by eighteen my answer is 75 pages per week. I saw an improvement in my reading because the number of pages I read in a week had increased. I am quite satisfied and this motivates me to read more. I want to tighten up my gear and raise it to at least 100 pages per week in order to achieve my wish. Usually I would have read books that are around 100 to 200 pages, but this time it is longer than usual.…

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

This was the first turning point in my journey towards literacy. From then on I had to go to tutoring with my teacher every day for an hour after school or during recess to learn how to read. My parents would make me practice reading everything from magazines in the doctor's office to books in the library. By the end of the year, I was all caught up with the rest of my classmates, reading at a second grade level. Now that I did not see reading as a giant, I had begun to actually enjoy English class in school however the feeling of security was short lived.…

It was there. Its presence marked my final destination. My fear suddenly started to creep over me just thinking about it like a ghost that every child was afraid of, when they turned off the lights. I began to ask my friends if it was true, and they said “Yes” and that it was due tomorrow! All of a sudden a chill ran down through me and my hands started to sweat of nervousness as I started to write down the homework.…

My mom had enough of my teacher by then and wanted to request that if I can move to an English class for my upcoming 3rd grade year. The answer was no for the reason that they thought I wouldn’t be able to academically achieve what a 3rd grader would be able to do. That really upset my mom that she went to the district’s office to fight for a request. At the end, my mom won but we had a challenge of getting myself to have the reading and writing skills of an incoming 3rd grader in all English. I did many hours of tutoring and homework that summer before and during the school year when I started 3rd grade.…

My teacher was a big influence on my reading. I remember his name was Mr. Pointer and he was like my reading coach. We would all go to the library and we would have a reading session. When he gave me my feedback it was harsh and it made me not want to read anymore, but took that criticism and I turned it into motivation.…
