Personal Narrative: How Writing Has Changed My Life

I currently live in a small beach town right outside of Jupiter, Florida known as Hobe Sound. It’s a “drive by town” as I would describe it. There really isn’t anything there would attract or gravitate people to stay there; its better to just look at it out a car window well passing it. It is currently about six hours outside of Tallahassee, Florida. This seems really long, but originally I signed to go to University of Mississippi and later realized that being more than ten hours away from home was to much for me. Three years ago my mother was diagnosed with stage four melanoma cancer on her right thigh that was rapidly growing and spreading. The doctors did multiple operations that were life risking; she survived every surgery, but things …show more content…
Academics has also been something that I have struggled with in the past especially when it comes to writing. In 2004 I was diagnosed with dyslexia and on a scale to 1-10 I was probably at a 9 to how bad I it was. I had no idea how to write. Slowly with the help of many I eventually got the foundation of how to write a simple essay, but its still something I will always struggle with. I would consider myself a very creative person, however when it comes to research papers and stuff of that sorts you might be better off looking at a blank piece of paper because its probably will be better then any essay I write. Now being ENC 2135 its all about research and writing (can’t you tell its my favorite?), which is something that obviously needs more improvement. I would like to learn how to outline a research paper and how to write an interesting paper; one that has a voice and doesn’t sound boring. Even though my writing skills aren’t at its finest I do love to read even though it is a struggle at times also. I love reading the typically girly stuff like Nicolas Sparks, but I also love classics like pride and prejudice and anything by Shakespeare.

This semester I feel that I have somewhat improved as a writer. The first thing from this class that has helped me was the peer reviews. They have decreased the nervousness that I used to feel when I would ask people to help and for suggestions. The second thing that impacted me as a writer was the discussion post about different writing styles and how different people had different processes. The one that impacted me the most was the video about David Sedaris.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

My first year at Colorado College helped me identify where I should focus my efforts to improve my writing in the future. The most significant gain from my first year here has been a clearer understanding of my writing process. This has resulted in realizing a number of ways to improve my writing. Besides time management, I have identified some areas where I can improve my actual writing. I need to structure my writing time better: planning my essay before I begin writing, keeping an updated copy of my outline on hand, giving myself interim deadlines, and allowing plenty of time for editing.…

My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

As I've gotten older in middle school I can see how much iv changed over the years and how my work has gotten better. At the beginning of the year, I didn't understand the writing techniques. I've always struggled with my writing and organizer and always been behind, but now I understand my topics and what I'm supposed to be writing. One of my greatest strengths is being able to create a story out of anything, I also took it in my hands to make sure all my questions are answered to understand what I'm writing about. Yet, there are also parts I need to improve my grammar and word choice.…

When I think about an event that changed my writing, I think less about one specific event and more about past writings and teachers. During high school I took quite a few writing classes with a variety of teachers. Those teachers often influenced my writing, but only for a short while. The exception to that would have been my 10th grade composition teacher and my mythology teacher. These two teachers had an incredible influence on my writing and how I write today.…

Who doesn’t struggle with writing? I know I always have struggled with writing, for the longest time I didn’t even really understand the differences in sentences, and it is something that’s still confuses me a little bit. To be completely honest I sometimes procrastinate longer than I should when it comes to writing, so I don’t always review the finished product the way I should. You also need to know how to pick and limit your writing topic. Rather than having many different ideas about one topic jumbled together, pick one idea and make a good, clear essay about it. You must have a topic where you are able to limit the size and handle it well. To be successful with academic writing, you must understand what you are doing when you write and it also depends on how you go about your writing task.…

I think that no matter what I am writing, I am always writing for a specific reader. Be it work emails or school assignments, I always keep in mind who I am writing to, so that my writing style does not come off as unprofessional, not respectful, or “too proper”. For example, in the design industry, you can never know whether a person will expect complete professionalism from you, or will he want to talk like a human instead of a robot. When writing emails to clients, coworkers or the boss, I first try to understand my audience and “predict” what level of professionalism will they expect from me, and only then I will send my email to avoid making a fool of myself.…
