Case Study: Change at DuPont
To what extent are the following approaches to change embedded in the Dupont story (justify your answer, providing specific examples):

OD – Organizational Development is clearly the main focus here at DuPont. Tom had a vision to improve the organizational standards at DuPont not focusing on any problems that may have been present. The projected outcome for DuPont’s organizational structure was improving for the better of the company and the employees. Tom wanted to development to increase productivity for the company and its employees which would allow to company to be in a better stable place in the near future. You will explain the change to a group of DuPont employees from each approach (two different change explanations). Compare and contrast the steps taken in each approach. Which approach do you think would work better from the point of view of the staff? Why? How easy/difficult will it be to adopt this approach? What broad conclusions can be drawn?
DuPont is going through reorganization. The company has not been doing very well for several years. Part of the company is shifting overseas to accommodate the needs of potentially new partners. This leaves the company in a very shaking status. DuPont has to let go 200 employees and retrain the remaining employees for the new advancements that is about to take place. Downsizing is never a good topic for any company. Having the group of employees see the vision for the company is vital. Employees are already feeling scared for their positions, so job security is of some importance as well. Allowing the employees to understand the need for the change and inviting their ideas and feedback will increase awareness and generate a comfort zone among all involved. Both approaches seem necessary at this point. Problem solving requires a response to the problem and it also has to share a common ground from both parties prospective. The appreciative inquiry will produce a common ground. Looking at what has been working for the company and adding to what can improve the system will allow the employees to be receptive to the change.
