The investigation of this case study will explore Shawn Fraser’s role as executive director of Carmichael Outreach (Carmichael), which is a nonprofit organization that supports homeless and other individuals in need (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). A possible leadership approach employed by Fraser will be discussed, and will include examples from the case study. The outcome of his leadership will be examined and will attempt to determine the success or failure of the approach. Possible recommendations for the improvement of Fraser’s leadership approach will also be discussed.

Adaptive leaders also motivate and focus the attention of others to discover and adjust their values in order to find new avenues of growth (Northouse, 2016). The is demonstrated by Fraser’s work with the board of directors, in which he helped to recruit new board members capable of making changes that would strengthen Carmichael’s ability to support marginalized individuals in its service area (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). In addition to this, Fraser also was noted as having a high degree of influence with board members, which further supports the concept of growth and encouragement for others to resolve changes in their surroundings (Northouse, 2016; Rowe & Guerrero, …show more content…
It would have been advantageous to Fraser to determine whether the housing issue was a technical or adaptive challenge. From the information in the case study, it seems that the problem was adaptive in nature, but Fraser sought to solve it through technical means of his own authority and expertise, even though housing support would have been better served through an adaptive process (Northouse, 2016; Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). Fraser had a different behaviors available to him, but to be truly adaptive he would have had to use the selected behaviors that were relevant to the actual situation (Yukl, & Mahsud, 2010). In terms of stolen food, security of staff and clients, as well as background checks of volunteers, Fraser lacked a strong commitment to these tasks, which should be addressed through an adaptive model. There may have been a degree of role ambiguity concerning staff on these matters, which should have been clarified by Fraser (i.e. priorities, standards, policies, etc.) earlier in his
