Introduction
Part Five gives five practices that will keep leaders focused on their purpose while leading adaptive change. These are steps, which will help leaders to negotiate the ethics of leadership and their purpose. By following these steps, leaders will be able to keep their purpose alive, negotiate their purposes, integrate their ambitions and aspirations, and will eventually learn how to avoid common traps. Part Five teaches leaders how to step out of their normal routine to make tough decisions. Negotiating is not always easy, because leaders must calculate potential damage to others, assess the damage to their self-image, and always keep one question at the forefront of their mind: “Do the means justify ends in this instance?” I often ask this question when trying to determine the next step or to make the right decision. Making the right decisions in my new context has caused me to step back and assess every situation before stepping in and saying yes or no. Saying no to things that were allowed to happen in the past is one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make in my new context. Although I stand by my decision, it’s still doesn’t feel good. Stepping out of myself, or shall I say my feelings, and stepping into a true leadership role is requiring me to make tough decisions.
