A huge debate over the years is the question of “is management the same thing as leadership?” To answer this question you have to take into account another question, does an effective manager inherently become a good leader, and vice versa? The answer is not always. It is possible to be an effective manager without developed leadership skills and, it is possible to be a leader without having ever managed a team of people. This essay will bring to light the major differences between management and leadership. Management and leadership go hand-in-hand, they complement one another. Good leadership will make someone want to stop their current habits and walk into a situation where they would have otherwise not considered walking into. Followers will be loyal to a leader because they feel inspired by that individual and believe that what they are doing will lead them to become a better person. In the same research that was conducted regarding manager’s backgrounds, a considerable number of leaders contrastingly overcame some kind of obstacle in life such as a traumatic childhood, or even a disability of theirs. It is believed that because of this, leaders tend to be more risk-seeking, and believe that hurdles are a natural occurrence and that they must be overcome (“Leadership vs. …show more content…
Gandhi inspired many thousands of people to fight for their rights and their country’s (India) independence from the British. Gandhi did not hold any kind of power role, he was not an army general, held a political title, nor was he a rich man but none the less he was able to influence many people around the world. He even inspired leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. through his struggles of achieving equal rights for Black men and women several years later (“Mahatma Gandhi…”). Farah Nazarali-Stranieri points out some of Gandhi’s most effective influence when she says, “Gandhi knew that the only solution to hatred, ignorance and fear was love, truth, and forgiveness. He knew that overcoming unjust hierarchies doesn’t mean inverting them; it means eliminating them altogether. Gandhi and his followers, like those who risked their lives to hide Jews during the Nazi regime, were prepared to die to make injustice visible for the entire world to see” (Nazarali-Stranieri). For a person to be so dedicated to a cause that they would likely die if need be, this shows true leadership and it goes beyond the scope of management. Gandhi has no authority over his followers, they follow him by choice, therefore by definition this is not management but very effective
