My Experience Of Reflectioning Autism In The Classroom

Improved Essays
On my first day of my observation and I began meeting with Principal Phillip. Principle Phillip kindly introduced me to the school and told me what is expected from me as a guest in her school. She then provided me with a schedule of the different classrooms I would be observing. She then walked me over to Mrs. Supple’s class where I was quickly introduced. I sat down in the back of the class and started taking notes.
This class is a SDC class for Language Arts. The class mostly consists of students with learning disabilities and a few with high functioning Autism in the first hour and in the second hour students have the same disabilities but to a greater degree there is also one student with a diagnosis of ED. The class also has a teacher’s

I feel she displayed somewhat of a tough love among her students. She was firm when she needed to be, but very kind and caring at other times. Whenever a student did well she gave tremendous praise to that student. When a student was struggling and she knew that that student could do the task at hand. She provided the right amount of scaffolding to the student which allowed them to come to conclusions on their own. For example, during a class among my 2nd hour Mrs. Supple asked a student if he could explain to her why talking to his peers would be considered different than talking to a teacher. The student replied “among peers your peer you talk with more …ugh … more … ummm …”. He struggled with a particular word in his explanation. Instead of just saying the word he was struggling with. She was patient and gave him guidance by showing the word he was trying to say in her face and in her gestures and after a few seconds he said “expression”. Mrs. Supple gave the student a huge smile and his other classmates erupted in congratulation one even grabbed the student shoulder gave him a positive squeeze and said good job. The student that struggled was one of the students that has autism and he could not stop smiling for the rest of the period. This was such a great moment and I was so happy to have the …show more content…
Supple moves much quicker in her first class than she does in her second class because in her second class. She provides more detailed instructions and allows for more time for the students to complete their work. One way that her second class is able to move faster is that she uses identical lessons from her first class and uses the work they completed for the second class to copy down. She was told me she does this because if she does not want the class would fall behind because it takes them much longer to come to conclusions than it does her first period class. I can understand that Mrs. Supple has deadlines and standards to meet, but I can also believe that it is unfair to the students to deny them an opportunity to grow their academic abilities with their own hard work. During my observation I noticed that her second class remains on task much better than her first period class and wonder if she gave them an opportunity to come up with their own work, instead of having them copy the previous classes completed work, if they would surprise her with better quality work. I, however, am not the professional though and have to trust that she is doing what is best for the students. I do think though by denying them the opportunity she is, in a way, stunting their growth just a little bit. There is a student in Mrs. Supple’s class, who will be referred to as Sally; Sally is a talented artist who likes to write poems to go along with her artwork. Sally’s disability was not

Student A from the morning class has a learning disability that prevents him from focusing and becomes easily frustrated. During one on one instruction, I would repeat the directions and sometimes the child will have moments, For example, there was an ant on his backpack, and he began to scream and run while most students will stomp on the bug. Student A made progress but will benefit from special education because the student will receive more attention compared to a regular classroom. Regular classes are unable to provide that one on one instruction and teachers may not be adequately trained to teach children with a learning disability. (Spring, 2014, pg. 126)…

With the end of the second week, my student teaching experience at Wolford Elementary has been fulfilling since I have already performed the majority of my mentor’s duties. The week commenced with modeling by my mentor, preparing me for my unaccompanied instruction of Reading and Writing. After my instruction, my mentor and I debriefed discovering comparable items which required attention, such as, presenting frequent reinforcements and reminding the students of their reinforcement. With the constructive criticism from my mentor, it prepared me for my observation unfortunately, on the day of my observation my primary student referenced in my lesson plan was absent. The first instruction of the day is a group of three students for reading…

The secretary was calling teachers and asking if Leah and I could observe and the first few teachers said “no.” they mentioned that they were not ready for an observation. While we were waiting I was able to observe that there was one teacher close to the main door entrance. She was greeting everyone that walked through the doors with a “good morning” and a smile.…

Observations: Students were allowed to wear a hat to class if they had paid a dollar. Usually this is not allowed in class. They seemed pretty excited over allowed to wear a hat in the classroom. When the students finally settled in to the classroom, Mrs. Geisheimer gave the students a Do Now. Initially, for many students, college can be extremely demanding and strenuous. When a student has other things going on outside of school, their college priorities can be put on the back burner. Lives are volatile, and that can affect one’s performance in education. It is easy to get caught up in life and to forget the responsibilities of college. However, do “hard lives” justify excessive absences, rewrite opportunities, late papers, and/or plagiarized work?…

The person whom I had chosen to interview with is a woman who has three daughters diagnosed with autism. Her name is “Dana Reeds,” and her daughters (beginning with the oldest to the youngest) are named “Priscilla,” age twelve, “Tina,” age eleven, and “Leslie,” age eight. Dana has four other children who don’t have a disability, and all of them go to school. This mother was the first option in my head to be the perfect example for the interview. I am related to her, and knowing she is an easy-going person, I knew she wouldn’t mind if I asked a few questions on the daughters who have autism.…

A teacher’s goal is to maximize his or her student’s potential. Traditionally, the biggest challenge for students with disabilities was to meet their needs in the areas of social, behavioral, cognitive, perceptive and motor skills (Adebisi et al. 14). A learning disability is defined by the Schwab Foundation as a person who is diagnosed by a professional with a difficulty as a result of a CNS dysfunction in the areas or reading, writing, math, science, reasoning speaking, or listening. In order to meet the diverse needs of these students, they were traditionally removed from the mainstream classroom and placed in a separate classroom to learn. Although this was the best way to meet the students’ academic needs, their social needs were grossly…

Through the content analysis of the interview data, six themes reflecting participants’ knowledge of autism emerged: (a) belief that individuals with autism have control over their condition; (b) misconceptions about etiology of autism; (c) limited knowledge about attributes of autism; (d) previous experience with people with autism; (e) perception of others’ attitudes toward a peer with autism; and (f) sources of information. Belief that individuals with autism have control over their condition. The major misconception reflected in students’ responses was the notion of an individual having control over autism. Participant 17 reported that people could avoid or prevent autism by “calming down and sitting by themselves somewhere”…
