School Hat Observation

Observations: Students were allowed to wear a hat to class if they had paid a dollar. Usually this is not allowed in class. They seemed pretty excited over allowed to wear a hat in the classroom. When the students finally settled in to the classroom, Mrs. Geisheimer gave the students a Do Now. The way she described the assignment was confusing because she told the students to do the right side of the page, but when showing the class the paper, she was pointing to the left side of the page. Most of the students looked very confused as to what the assignment was. Instead of asking specifics as to what she wanted from the assignment, many students just looked around aimlessly. Also, the dollar was donated to the school. By donating money to wear a hat, students are not only self-expressing, but providing for a cause. It is important to teach students life skills, such as giving back to the community. Who knows what the school is going to do with the dollar, but it teaches the students to be giving by motivating them to donate by being rewarded with something that they like. With the class assignment I think Mrs. Geisheimer confused the students look of confusion because of the directions with the thought that the students did not understand the material on the page that she assigned. When the students were working on the laptops they seemed very involved in learning the content. This is hard to find in math, but working on the computers brought in the students interest in the material. Working in a group is also beneficial because if one student is confused, another student could be able to help explain what to do and how to perform the math problem. Sometimes it is good to put students in groups because it is important to hear different ideas that can help spark the understanding of the content. Working in groups also helps form the sense of a community in the classroom. Sapon-Shevlin (1999) suggests five different characteristics of a community in the classroom. These five characteristics are: Security, Open communication, Mutual Liking, Shared
