Wolford Elementary Observation

With the end of the second week, my student teaching experience at Wolford Elementary has been fulfilling since I have already performed the majority of my mentor’s duties. The week commenced with modeling by my mentor, preparing me for my unaccompanied instruction of Reading and Writing. With the constructive criticism from my mentor, it prepared me for my observation unfortunately, on the day of my observation my primary student referenced in my lesson plan was absent.

The procedure that I implemented affects whole class student learning because I am able to more efficiently use my time. Instead of taking time out of my day to get the Absent Folder, find all of the work that belongs in the folder, and place it on the student’s desk, I can spend time teaching students. Since all of the absent student’s work is in one place, when the student returns, he is able to look through the work and ask questions when I am free, thus freeing up my time to spend teaching the whole class. The responsible student’s job was understood by the students and they were also excited to have this new duty of taking care of the absent student. I feel that this procedure gives the students some responsibility which also builds their confidence and their feeling of being a part of the class community.…

My internship is at Sixth Ward Middle School in the Intervention classroom with Mrs. Andrea Landry. This class is designed to help students who are struggling in their core classes. During Intervention we compete incomplete assignments with students, provide extra assistance in all core classes, and build reading and math skills to prepare students for LEAP testing, but we also teach a lesson. However, I learned quickly that our mornings in the classroom never go as planned. There are days that we cannot teach our usual twenty minute lesson because children either need extra time to complete a test from another class or they simply need extra help in another core class so, we make adjustments to our schedule based on each particular class.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
