Personal Narrative: Tulip Grove Elementary School

The Power to Win must come from Within
Before I entered the school I looked it up on a webpage Zillow.com. I know that my mom and my sister would use it a lot. Especially when they were looking into moving houses or buying a home. Tulip Grove Elementary school had a rating of 8 out of 10. For me that tells me that the school is considered as a school that is above average. The school has 307 students from K-5th grade. In addition, the student-teacher ratio was 15:1(awesome). I also saw that the school was identified as primarily multi-racial. The extracurricular activities on this page mentioned band, chorus, drawing and painting

She mentioned that in the beginning of the year she made sure that the students followed instructions and worked independently. She used the technique of speaking very softly and nicely to the students. She established excellent rapport with her students. That has allowed her to work with her students as a facilitator instead of having to do much discipline to get their attention. I was able to notice that the 4th and 5th grade teachers were very disciplinary. Some teachers actually seemed negative. Maybe they were fed up with the students or they had a long day. This teacher was very direct, loud, and she was frustrated often. She made the class environment difficult. Another 4th grade teacher was passive aggressive. The first grade teacher and one 4th grade teacher served their students as a facilitator. The other teachers were very …show more content…
We asked for the vice principal and the secretary tried contacting her. The main office seemed out of control. Teachers, parents and students were coming in and out of the office. After a few minutes the secretary told us that the vice principal and the teachers were not expecting us. They first called us interns, then practicum students. Leah and I mentioned that we were Bowie state graduate students from the school psychology program. They blamed the confusion on Bowie and it made me feel uncomfortable. The secretary (an old lady) was whispering to another old lady about Leah and I. It was weird because we could obviously hear them talking bad about the “interns, practicum or whatever they called us). We were asked if we could observe a different day but we said that it would be better to observe that day. The secretary was calling teachers and asking if Leah and I could observe and the first few teachers said “no.” they mentioned that they were not ready for an observation. It was confusing because the secretary told the teachers that we were intern, then practicum students and finally just observers.
While we were waiting I was able to observe that there was one teacher close to the main door entrance. She was greeting everyone that walked through the doors with a “good morning” and a smile. The school building was very clean, the classrooms looked neat, the level of noise was

From my personal experience, when I was in elementary school I remember my teacher would let us sit on yoga ball it always helped me concentrate and it helped me when I was really active because I could not move around, it will make me fall if I move around. I like the idea of standing desks because I prefer standing a lot but when I need to I could sit down on the tool, but I could still move my legs around and be somewhat active. So if one day you're feeling antsy you can just stand. Also I think if your tired it could help you stay awake. Mark Benden also states that sitting desk can cause kids to be obese, he also says that too much sitting is bad for your health.…

To start off, the major physical feature of the school is not very good because it is overcrowded. Two years ago the county redistricted, and now there are about three times as many kids here as there were in sixth grade. So now, when you are in the hallways, you are shoulder to shoulder with the person standing next to you. The cafeteria is really loud and you are sitting shoulder to shoulder with the kid sitting…

Although I have not been contacted by anyone from the school, I have been told they were interested in having me fill a long term sub position after graduation. Staff from BSIS have been in contact with the Mrs. Blanton, the assistant principal, and Mrs. Scruggs, but I have not been contacted other than the observation. On Wednesday morning the reading coach observed me teach math and reading for almost two hours. This was one of the most unusual mornings of the entire school year. During this two-hour time period the class phone rang three or four times, there were five or six interruptions from people knocking on the door to pull students out for intervention or to climb the rock wall because they sold enough items during the fundraiser.…

The good thing about this schools that I like is will motivate the students and tell them what exactly what to do also the teacher would help and see what every student is doing but the only thing is that the teacher do not gives any ideas to students when a students are not sure about an answer for a question. Also the teacher does not have the control of the classroom when students get noisy or get up from their desk. Some students are noisy and annoying and it’s very hard for a person to deal with so many students at the same time when they are noisy. I remember back in the days in high school some of the student were noisy and annoying or just throwing papers and it was hard for a teacher to take the control of the class. She just called the securities from the school to take them out the class.…

The teacher had good control over the classroom and was consistent in her discipline when children would misbehave. It was clear when I was observing that all of the children had a good grasp of the classroom rules. She would let the children choose where they wanted to go for “Choice Time”, but she would let them go one by one, and called on the children who were sitting quietly first. She also went around and monitored children at each section, and made sure they stayed out of the areas they were supposed to. For example, in the classroom there is a corner underneath a loft that has blankets and pillows.…

As I watched Frankie jumble up the letters of her name, despite spending all morning practicing the correct way to write them, I wondered if she would ever be able to write out complete sentences without help. This was just one example of the constant repetition I endured and that sometimes tested my patience that summer. My parents had suggested that I volunteer at the Extended School Year (ESY) program for special needs students that ran for the whole month of July. Although I was hesitant due to the fact that the program began early in the morning during summer vacation, I decided to sign up in order to get an idea of whether or not working with children would be something I was interested in pursuing. When I arrived on the first day, I walked into a classroom in which the students and teachers were all familiar with one another and felt extremely out of place.…

Working with everyone at Woodland Acres Elementary has made me want to dedicate more time to students in diverse settings. I have tried to educate myself more on the challenges they face and have spoken with other teachers in more privileged settings about these students and their dedication to education.…

I believe my ideal classroom will be founded on the principal of establishing a safe, intellectual environment where my students have the opportunity to grow and develop physically and emotionally during this important time of their lives. In order to provide this type of environment for my students, I will make my expectations for my classroom clear, and the consequences for going against my expectations equally as clear. The basis of my classroom will be built on mutual respect and trust. I plan on creating this mutual trust and respect by developing close relationships with all of my students. Through these close relationships, I plan on using my students’ interests and strengths to make my classroom and assignments as interesting for my students as possible.…
