Animal Testing

Many companies around the United States still use animals to test their products. These companies are harming animals and breaking laws. Some countries in Europe have banned animal testing (Alternatives to). Organizations such as PETA have formed to stop animal testing. The cosmetic industry should stop using animal testing because of the number of animals that are killed each year, the neglect and abuse that the animals go through and the alternative research methods that can be used.

Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in laboratories for cosmetics testing (Medical Testing). The animals in these labs are abused and treated inhumanely. The animal welfare act was created to help protect these animals. However,

Every day animals are abused and neglected in labs that are used to test some of the products we use every day. These animals are harmed for doing nothing the animals in these labs need to be saved from the abuse and the neglect that they go through.

Many scientists have found ways to eliminate the use of animals during testing. You may wonder why animals are used in testing if it is more costly and there are alternative methods that can be used. The answer to this question is that people believe that it is not possible to completely eliminate the use of animals in cosmetic testing. However, scientists are coming up with new ideas to test these products. The scientist in Europe has come up with an artificial skin that reacts to products like human skin would (Alternatives to). They have also developed an artificial human eye that can be used to test eye irritation (Alternatives to). Computer modelling can help predict how our bodies will react to new substances by putting what we know about human cells and the new product and the computer will use mathematics to predict how we'll react to the new product (Alternatives to). Companies have been able to reduce animal testing by using human volunteers (Alternatives to). Some companies that have stopped using animal testing are Revlon, Avon, Mary Kay, and Gillette (Alternatives to). Gillette has donated 100 thousand dollars each year to help fund research for alternative methods

Mice and rats make up most of the animals that are used for testing because their DNA is so similar to ours (Animal Testing). While mice and rats are used for a lot of tests there is nothing in the animal welfare act that protects them (Animal Testing). There are many laws about the use of monkeys and primates in labs due to the fact that they are endangered. Many labs still use these animals in their labs and it ends up harming them. In Boston a primate was being used for a test, but was found dead in a test chamber after only 10 minutes (The Animal Welfare Act Does Not). This lab had bad supervision of the test and had horrible housing for the primates used in the test. Incidents like this have happened multiple times at different labs across the country. In 2011 a lab at Princeton university was cited for not giving monkeys enough access to water (The Animal Welfare Act Does Not). Labs across the country are harming animals that are endangered or animals that have nothing to protect them. Harming animals that have nothing to protect them is inhumane and unethical and should be

These, over one hundred million, animals are used for many different types of testing and experiments. Some of these test include forced chemical exposure intoxicate testing, which can include oral force-feeding, forced inhalation, skin or injection into the abdomen, muscle, etc., exposure to drugs, chemicals or infectious disease at leaves that cause illness, pain and distress, or death, and Genetic manipulation, addition or “knocking out” of one or more genes. One of the first cases of animal testing is the Silver Spring Monkeys case. The case was brought about in the summer of 1981 by a student named Alex Pacheco, one of PETA’s. Alex Pacheco was working undercover at the Institute for Behavioral Research (IBR) located in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he found 17 monkeys in horrendous living conditions.…

Any cosmetic or medical companies will tell consumers that their products are the best since it has been tested on animals for safety, but the truth behind animal testing will make buyers think twice about their merchandise. Nowadays, more and more people are teaming up against animal testing. Laboratory testing is done on substances that make up medication and cosmetics, such as perfume, lotion, soap, etc. Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, and check the safety of products destined for human use. Substances are injected into animal’s bodies to prove that products are harmless to people, and the environment.…

One alternative is to use human tissues instead of animals, for testing and cosmetics. If products are being made for humans, it would be best to use the primary source it is being used for. " Humans and animals differ too much to make animal research useful” (James-Enger, 1998:1) If this alternative goes in place and is successful it will decrease the millions of animals being killed or injured for the research each year. If this method can be mastered, it will be the best alternative for animal testing. If scientist can use human tissues to develop test models, they will be able to collect more accurate data; which will allow them to produce safer medicines and cosmetic products.…

Also, plenty of these companies that test on animals claim to do it because there are requirement laws for it in other countries that they sell to (“About Cosmetic Testing”); if this is the case then these companies shouldn 't sell to those countries till new laws are passed. So on, there is no necessity to use animals for cosmetics testing, making it unethical and cruel to the animals. There should be more laws on testing on animals in the basis of cosmetics, but separate from…

According to Troy Seidle a pole concluded that, “88 percent of us believe animal testing causes pain and suffering to animals and that such suffering just for cosmetics isn’t worth it, especially when safe ingredients are already available,”(Seidle). Considering that most people don’t feel the need to buy products with newly tested ingredients, why should companies continue to do that it is not an absolutely necessary practice. There are thousands of chemicals out there that have already gone through the process of being tested so it wouldn’t be like companies couldn’t make new products, they could make many. Yes companies want to make money by selling newly improved products but that is not going to make people want to buy products that aren’t apart of their daily use. Gregory Mone states that animal testing is a long and expensive process and can take several years and use up millions of dollars to carry out, (Mone).…

Testing cosmetics on animals is a very controversial issue that has grown over the past years. I believe that cosmetic animal testing is wrong and should be banned because it is cruel, inaccurate, not very reliable, and has been proven to be unnecessary. Approximately 200,000 animals will suffer and die every year for cosmetics around the world. We as a whole have all decided that this is not necessary which is why we stopped making testing on animal cosmetics something that had to be done. Companies still continue to do it.…

This quote explains animal testing perfectly; “Many cosmetic companies test their new products and ingredients by forcing rabbits, hamsters, and mice, among others, to endure horrific practices such as breathing in poisonous fumes or having lethal chemicals poured into their eyes and rubbed into their skin”(Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). Many supporters of animal testing will argue that it can have positive outcomes, however, humanity uses it in vain ways. This makes it especially wrong because humans are treating animals cruelly and inhumanely mostly to look attractive. Continuing on about cosmetic testing on animals: “Animal testing for cosmetics is an outdated practice and does not provide the most reliable results regarding the safety, performance, or possible reactions that cosmetic products or ingredients could have in a person” (Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). The reason to continue these means of testing on animals proves to be no longer relevant because easier and more reliable ways of testing do indeed exist.…

The main reason why we animal test is for cosmetic research, not medical research, which is the only type that can be half accepted. Medical research for humans on animals means they still do not get the correct results we need because of the two different reactions of chemicals in two different animals. Popular brands hide the way they animal test because they know that when people find out their product will not sell as well. Global warming is also a huge and rising problem on our earth, and by cutting out cosmetic research on animals, it will mean a few hundred less factories running around the world and releasing fumes into the atmosphere. This will mean a lot of jobs lost, but there are plenty more jobs in the world and it will only benefit our world.…
