Many companies around the United States still use animals to test their products. These companies are harming animals and breaking laws. Some countries in Europe have banned animal testing (Alternatives to). Organizations such as PETA have formed to stop animal testing. The cosmetic industry should stop using animal testing because of the number of animals that are killed each year, the neglect and abuse that the animals go through and the alternative research methods that can be used.
Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in laboratories for cosmetics testing (Medical Testing). The animals in these labs are abused and treated inhumanely. The animal welfare act was created to help protect these animals. However, …show more content…
Every day animals are abused and neglected in labs that are used to test some of the products we use every day. These animals are harmed for doing nothing the animals in these labs need to be saved from the abuse and the neglect that they go through.
Many scientists have found ways to eliminate the use of animals during testing. You may wonder why animals are used in testing if it is more costly and there are alternative methods that can be used. The answer to this question is that people believe that it is not possible to completely eliminate the use of animals in cosmetic testing. However, scientists are coming up with new ideas to test these products. The scientist in Europe has come up with an artificial skin that reacts to products like human skin would (Alternatives to). They have also developed an artificial human eye that can be used to test eye irritation (Alternatives to). Computer modelling can help predict how our bodies will react to new substances by putting what we know about human cells and the new product and the computer will use mathematics to predict how we'll react to the new product (Alternatives to). Companies have been able to reduce animal testing by using human volunteers (Alternatives to). Some companies that have stopped using animal testing are Revlon, Avon, Mary Kay, and Gillette (Alternatives to). Gillette has donated 100 thousand dollars each year to help fund research for alternative methods …show more content…
Mice and rats make up most of the animals that are used for testing because their DNA is so similar to ours (Animal Testing). While mice and rats are used for a lot of tests there is nothing in the animal welfare act that protects them (Animal Testing). There are many laws about the use of monkeys and primates in labs due to the fact that they are endangered. Many labs still use these animals in their labs and it ends up harming them. In Boston a primate was being used for a test, but was found dead in a test chamber after only 10 minutes (The Animal Welfare Act Does Not). This lab had bad supervision of the test and had horrible housing for the primates used in the test. Incidents like this have happened multiple times at different labs across the country. In 2011 a lab at Princeton university was cited for not giving monkeys enough access to water (The Animal Welfare Act Does Not). Labs across the country are harming animals that are endangered or animals that have nothing to protect them. Harming animals that have nothing to protect them is inhumane and unethical and should be
