For many years the testing of cosmetics on animals has been considered a major issue in the US and globally. Cosmetic testing is the most controversial area of animal testing. Each and every cosmetic product used by women is first tested on animals. Approximately, 20 million animals are used for all kinds of testing every year. Not only several leading cosmetics companies have already stopped testing products on animals, but also the European Union, Israel, and Norway have banned cosmetic testing on animals, making it illegal to do so within their borders. In 2014 India became the first cruelty-free cosmetics zone in South Asia. Cosmetic animal testing is a very emotional and a controversial topic around the world which can be better understood by its definition, history, supporting and opposing arguments. …show more content…
Later on in 1933, cosmetic testing began after a woman used mascara that caused her eyes to become irritated and later went blind. The incident caused a serious concern for cosmetic companies to inspect their products before it is used by the public. In 1983 the federal food, drug, and cosmetic passed an act were the federal government have to view the safety of products which includes; foods, drugs, and cosmetics. In the 80's and 90's there was increased public awareness about the use of animals in the testing of cosmetics. A movement against this gathered with people across Europe contacting their government and demanding action to be taken to protect animals from the testing of vanity
