Angry Client – Techniques used:
After watching and going through the five interactive scenarios in the CD-rom, one important technique that was used in all the interactions was active listening. The US Department of States listed the four key rules of Active Listening as: a) Seek to understand before you seek to be understood b) Be non-judgmental c) Give your undivided attention to the speaker d) Use silence effectively.
In addition to active listening, many other techniques were utilized by the healthcare professional in the video. Some of which can be positive or negative. The three positives I noted were:
1) Giving recognition – This is defined as acknowledging and awareness; better than complimenting, which reflects the nurse judgement. This scene started with the healthcare professional recognizing the client’s emotional situation. She utilized a broad opening to allow the patient to start

Reminding the client about these conversations are important because the healthcare professional is trying to get the client to be comfortable for before she tells him about his condition. First she allows his to express what he is going through and then she pointed out that he maybe through clinical depression. She stated that this can be treated through medication and talk therapy, but she did not recommend it to the client. When the client said he had to do something, the healthcare professional used “Silent nod” to allow the patient to consider his

Sensing in active listening involves gathering all of the facts before forming an opinion. Often I have been guilty of not doing this myself, and before receiving all of the facts I have based my opinion on the wrong or incomplete information. Sensing would benefit me in the future because being well informed in healthcare management is important. As a manager in healthare management I would have to know exactly what is going on, and when. Not having all of the facts before making a decision could potentially hurt not only business but also end up hurting patients as well. Knowing how to listen first and then make conclusions would be beneficial in gathering facts to make important decisions.…

    T. Jasmine (2009) discuses two important aspects of therapeutic communication- listening and exploring. Listening as a therapeutic communication technique demonstrates that the nurse is genuinely interested in the patient. When listening to a patient the nurse and nursing student needs to be aware of how their body actions are being portrayed. Posture, facial expressions, and eye contact can be perceived in a positive or negative way to the patient (para. 12). One of the viewpoints on listening mentioned in the journal is a reference from Stickley and Freshwater (2006) discussing how listening is something that the nurse needs to realize within themselves in order to improve communication skills: “listening to oneself and being constantly aware of ones own thoughts and feelings, posture and actions is vital in improving ones skills of listening to others” (Jasmine, 2009, para.…

Listening is an important skill of interpersonal communication. It helps to develop good interpersonal relationships with others. While communicating with others it is important to listen to another person carefully to interpret his/her message properly and accurately.
