Introduction
My chosen topic is Active “listening” in online environment. The reason I chose this topic is because it’s important while I’m taking online classes. I have a lot of experience when it comes to dealing with listening in an online environment; both good and bad. However, I want to gain more knowledge and better ways to actively listen in an online environment. Active listening in an online environment is a lot different than active listening in person or in a classroom setting. Reading, engaging, concentrating and organizing is active listening in an online environment. It has a lot to do with following the Netiquette policy of a school as well. classroom listening has a significant amount of differences. To listen according to Merriam-Webster dictionary is “to pay attention to someone or something in order to hear what is being said, sung, played etc.” (Merrriam-Webster, 1828). The definition of listening would be true for a standard classroom environment because you can hear what the instructor is saying and can determine rather it is something you should be taking notes about or paying very close attention to. Listening to an instructor in an online class takes a little more effort than just listening to them speak like in a standard classroom set up. Listening in an online environment means you must read everything that is posted from the instructor. Sometimes instructors post videos for you to view that they have recorded. This would be the time you would be utilizing the definition of listening in an online environment. Also, active listening would be engaging in the discussion board with your peers. Engaging in the discussion board would be equal to answering questions and talking to your peers in a standard classroom …show more content…
Listening in any classroom environment is important. Determining what type of listening that needs to be accomplish will determine if your listening is active or not. Active listening in an online environment takes a little more effort and different strategies. In order to be successful in an online class you will have to develop active listening skills. Which we determined was engaging in the discussion board, asking questions and responding to questions; organizing your work so that you are able to turn in your course work on time, doing quiz and test when they are due. Organizing your work is almost the same thing as taking notes in a standard class. Reading everything the instructor has posted in the assignment links, announcements, feedback in graded projects, seminar folders and the discussion board are other ways to determine you are an active listener in an online environment. Active listening in an online environment will determine your success with online classes. The quicker you adapt a strategy to become an active online listener the easier it will be for you. The work load and the amount of things that you have to do will not be easier. However, performing the tasks that you need to perform to be an active listener will become
