A Time for Social Change within Higher Education
Mike Rose (2009) states in Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us, “A good education helps us make sense of the world and find our way in it.” I completely agree with this statement. It is powerful, and I do believe that education can help people find their way in the world. There is a problem, though. It does not lie in the quote by Rose. Rather, it lies in the education system that our nation provides for us. A broken system that does more harm than good for numerous reasons.
In my eyes, education can be used as a tool to change the world. This is a big statement to make, but I believe it is true and can be done. To be blunt, our current education system is fractured badly. We have an education system that puts students into boxes and restricts their limits at an early age. For example, boys are supposed to be excellent at math and science, so they are pushed into working harder on those subjects. Girls, since patriarchy still exists, are only supposed to be superb at writing, music, and art, which are subjects looked down upon. Not only is this detracting from student’s developmental growth, it limits creative thinking and continues to reinforce degrading gender stereotypes.
Furthermore, teachers are also not always the ones to blame for this atrocious education system. Countless school district administrators force teachers to educate a particular way. Teachers are given strict guidelines on how to teach and what…
