The Tesla Coil is a very enthralling invention created by Nikola Tesla in 1891. The high voltage, high frequency output of the amazing machine can cause strange effects in all sorts of materials. Though not a well known invention, the Tesla Coil plays a gigantic role in television and radio today. How does it work? What materials are used to make it? How can it be used today? And overall who was Nikola Tesla? The Tesla Coil is comprised of the following materials: a chassis, frame, cabinet or enclosure, a power cord to plug into the wall outlet or main wiring, a power switch, variac line filter, power supply, Power factor correction caps, Neon sign transmitter filter, spark gap materials, primary capacitors, bleeder resistors, and primary coil materials. Some other parts that help the magnificent machine work are as follows: PVC pipe, magnet wire, Top load materials, ground rod, high voltage wire to ensure the components are connected or low-resistance wire for spark plugs, plywood or plexiglas…

In essence, Tesla coils are a high-voltage, resonant transformer circuits. They consist of the six major components (Behrend 1), namely: Primary transformer Tank capacitor Spark gap Primary coil Secondary coil Toroid Figure 1: Tesla coil (diagram) A primary transformer is a step-up transformer that takes the line voltage of the AC source and steps it up to a range between 12 kV and 50 kV at 60 Hz (Johnson 4). The efficiency of this transformer is largely dependable on the construction…

the speaker can handle. High power performance can create heat of around 250°C(Langford-Smith, 1957, p. 835) hence the need for a metal chassis. It helps to dissipate heat and is sufficiently stiff. Another choice has to be made in choosing a stamped or cast metal basket. The latter tends to be more precise and maintains its stability. Aluminium cast frames are usually chosen for large woofer cones which have to deal with heavy magnets. On the one hand, the chassis has to be as strong as…

saying that both Tesla and Edison had many inventions that changed the world in a way. They both to me in my opinion were the utmost ingenious people to put forth ideas that no one else would of thought before. If it weren't for them both we won't be holding some of the stuff that we have today, like our phones and instead of electricity something else like candle power. I would love to be an apprentice on their side for either Edison or Tesla because it would have been so facinatincting to see…
