On Saturday 04/15/17 at 2258 hours I was dispatched to a residential burglary in progress at 12924 SE 301st ST in the City of Auburn, King Co, WA. Dispatch advised Jackie Chapman stated her neighbor, Coreen Wood, who lives at the above address, asked her to call 911, because people were breaking into her residence. Dispatch also advised Chapman stated Wood was out of town in Las Vegas, and was receiving text messages from college students living in her residence stating a tall black male was inside the residence attempting to break into the master bedroom. When Police arrived, two males, later identified as Nathan Hardin and Avary Anderson, jumped of the west side of the back deck. Officer J. Michels detained Anderson just to the west of the deck. Hardin continued running westbound. Officers announced to Hardin they were the Police and to stop, but Hardin continued running. K-9 Officer T. Nunn, Officer J. Triplett and Officer G. Lyons followed Hardin west bound to a red 1997 Honda Civic WA/AZD4555, which was parked in the cul-de-sac in the 30000 block of 128th CT SE. Officers located Hardin in the front passenger seat of the Honda, along with another male, Tyree Mott, who was seated in the driver’s seat of the Civic. Officers detained both Hardin and Mott in handcuffs and K-9 Officer Nunn advised them of their Constitutional Rights. Mott stated the vehicle belonged to him, and he was just sleeping in his vehicle waiting for Anderson and Hardin to collect Hardin’s…
English philosopher, political economist, and liberal John Stuart Mill published one of his most famous works in 1859: On Liberty. Mill explores the innate and given liberties of people, analyzing what is the extent in which society or government has valid reasons to exercise power over its people. He argues that the individual should not be under the jurisdiction of society or government if their actions are not harming anyone but themselves. The only time society or government should involve…
After WW1, the winners which were the United States, United Kingdom, and France adapted the underlying principles of liberalism that has been practiced since the 17th and 18th centuries to try and avoid war. Liberal thought is grounded in a notion that human nature is good, not evil, meaning that states thrive in a world governed by morality and law. States want to cooperate to achieve mutual goals in peace. Just like realism, liberalism derives from the observations and interpretations of…
In his piece, Thomas Paine strongly expresses a persuasive outlook as to why the colonists should fight for their independence. He believes that their willing right to be free shall not be put aside and that their abilities to achieve their freedom may be affected by factors such as God, the British, or even just simply the fact that Paine described the reasoning to get the colonists to fight in such an expressive way. Throughout this piece, Paine’s goal was to persuade the colonists to strive…
In his essay, Two Concepts of Liberty, Isaiah Berlin favours negative over positive liberty as it is “the truer and more humane ideal” and argues that positive law threatens individual autonomy by justifying paternalistic coercion. In his work, Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville views liberty as a benefit produced by political life under a free government and posits a conception of positive liberty as political participation. This essay will argue contrary to Berlin, that positive…
I believe that humans are rational beings, and are born with the rights of equality, and freedom. Every person through nature is given the opportunity to self-preserve and lead happy lives. Government exists to protect these rights, not take them away. I believe that conservatives approach to irrational human behavior creates a government that could be suppressing, and possible tyrannical. It is through conservatives emphasis of power that I find negative because it is through this emphasis of…
John Stewart Mill’s On Liberty is essential to understand not only liberty and the limits of government, but also on the limits of the majority and democracy to vitalize each individual to pursue his or her fullest potential. This is invaluable to understand for the best and the most prosperous path for the society to live in. To further explore Mill’s concept of liberty, two supplementary readings that I’ve used are a scholarly published article titled—John Stuart Mill and the “Marketplace of…
Can society advance without all of its people? In John Stuart Mill’s essay “On Liberty”, he makes the argument that we should have the freedom to perform any actions we wish, as long as those are not causing harm to any others. Mill makes a number of justifications for his argument throughout his essay. He understands that in order for society to function, there needs to be certain restrictions on individual’s liberty. He believes society’s control over an individual’s liberty should only be…
In world politics, there are two main theories, realism, and liberalism. Realism is when politicians exemplify or perceive things as they are in the world, unlike liberalism where it is believed that people are capable of improvement and have confidence that people will develop into something better (Baylis et Al,2014: 4). “Realism is mostly concerned with questions of order justice and change at the domestic, regional and international levels” (Lebow, 2016: 35), unlike liberalism which is…
One of the main critiques of Hegel in regards to the liberalism view of freedom is that the view of liberalism is only a partial view of freedom. By referring to liberalism as a partial freedom, Hegel is referring to its subjectivity. To Hegel, liberal freedom is a subjective freedom. In other words, it is a negative freedom, it is a system of rights. This is because according to Hegel, freedom is the “the worthiest and the holiest thing in humanity” where the core of freedom lies in free will…
