The hippie movement was the common title Americans used to define the out casted individuals and their actions that began to take place in the early 1960s and continued on through the 1970s. The movement started as vocal opposition to the United States taking part in the Vietnam War. Soon after, this generation ultimately transformed into a liberal counterculture. A counterculture is a subculture that has values and behavioral norms that are substantially different from those of the mainstream society, or what society expects of individuals. This culture often opposes the mainstream cultural customs. They also wanted to make it clear that they wanted all Americans to share equal rights. Considered an anti-war movement, it began mostly on college campuses among the youth of America. The movement later traveled throughout the rest of the world. The vast majority of the American population still supported the administration policy in Vietnam, a small but outspoken liberal minority was making its voice heard by the end of 1965. This minority included many students as well as prominent artists and intellectuals and members of the hippie movement, a growing number of young people who rejected authority and embraced the drug culture. From 1940 to 1950, there were almost 27 million people aged from 14 to 24, and this number increased to 40 million in the 1960s.
